Sunday showcases 24s at Interbike

With Interbike in full swing,  video clips  of all the new product lines are coming fast and furious from all the major BMX sites covering the event.  Not surprisingly, most bike companies are highlighting their 20″ offerings in these clips and leaving out the 24s in their lineup.

Sunday, on the other hand, takes a decidedly different route and leads off their video clip with a look at their new 24s.  Say what you will about Sunday, this is just another example of the level of support and innovation they’re bringing to the 24′ cruiser scene.

Contrast that with We the People, who despite having a relatively long history of making great 24″ BMX bikes, do very little to promote them or grow the market.  Checking out Vital BMX’s video of the WTP booth, you would never guess that they have one of the better 24s available. Seems crazy to not even mention it….especially given all the attention that Sunday has brought to the 24″ scene.





Dirt jumping training technique revealed

What does it take to be a top dirt jumper?

Is it skill?

Years of practice?

Cojones?

There’s must be something else…that little game-changer that takes your dirt jumping to the next level.

Turns out it’s a training technique that I didn’t quite suspect.

Try out a Model-C at Joyride 150

It looks like Ray’s MTB isn’t the only bike park where you can rent/try out the Sunday Model-C.

Sunday just announced that Joyride 150 (just outside of Toronto, Ontario) has added a Model-C to their rental fleet.

This is great news, not only because it’s sure to get more riders hooked on 24″ BMX, but  it also gives me even more of reason to visit Joyride 150. Even if I don’t have my bike with me, I can stop in for a session on a 24″!

Ever walk into a bike shop and get the feeling the guy behind the counter doesn’t quite “get” BMX?

Much less 24″ BMX?

I have a hunch that’s not going to be much of an issue if you shop at the Peddler Bike Shop in Austin, Texas.

Liquid frames aren’t just for the trails

To date most of the pictures and webclips featuring Liquid Bikes have been pretty trails-oriented.

Made me kind of curious to see how it would handle in the street and in skateparks.

I guess I can stop wondering.

CMC from Austin shows that, with a couple of pegs thrown on, the Liquid Feedback becomes a capable street/park machine. (Photos originally posted on ridemonkey.com)

DMR gets some skin in the game

Summer’s here and people are showing more skin.

Your bike should be no different.

Ready to take the plunge and rock the skinwall tire?

A good option might be the DMR Supermoto, available in wire and kevlar. Technically a MTB dirt jumping tire, it seems like it would be a great option for a 24″ BMX.  2.1 inches wide with a low profile  it would be at home at skateparks,  trails and race tracks. It’s relatively lightweight too.

Not sure how widely available this tire is in North America (DMR is based out of the UK) but their site shows both U.S. and Canada distribution so you should be able to get it if your bike shop deals with one of the listed distributors.

Update: The 24″ version of this tire is available in wire only. The 26″ version is available in both wire and kevlar.





Is a Model-C with wave tubing next?

I’m not sure how I missed this when it came out but inthegnar.com has a great interview with Jim Cielencki of Sunday Bikes on their site.

When asked about how Sunday has evolved over time he mentioned how 24s have impacted the company in a positive way:

The 24″ stuff has been an interesting surprise.  Bikes are at an interesting time.  It really seems like the definition of track bikes, MTB and BMX is becoming less clear. You are starting to see MTB and track bikes coming towards BMX with its tricks, style and use of BMX parts.  The 24″ has been great because it allows older and bigger guys to ride BMX without having to think they should be on a MTB.

What really got my attention though, is what Jim said what he was riding. In addition to a Third Wave 20″, he’s also riding a 24:

The 24″ is a Wave C prototype with front brakes.  My bike is so good right now.

Whoa…now that would be cool if it went into production. Wave tubing.

Fingers crossed the Wave C shows up at Interbike.





Is brakeless better?

Brakeless riding is prevalent in just about every area of freestyle bmx these days….especially street riding. While definitely not as widespread in the 24″ scene, it is starting to creep in.

High-profile guys like Jim Bauer have been riding their 24s brakeless for a while now and more and more cruiser builds are showing up without brakes.

Brakeless advocates argue that going without brakes makes them better riders: smoother and more committed to making the trick rather than braking at the last minute.

The revolution started a year ago today

It was this time last year that I finally got off my duff to put this blog together.

Along the way I’ve learned a lot and have gotten to know so many people that love 24″ BMX bikes as much I do.

I’m having a blast doing this and I’m glad you’re along for the ride.

FBM is doing it again…

Maybe it’s just me but everytime I see FBM, I think of the lyrics to KMFDM’s “Light“.  But I digress…

FBM posted another custom cruiser frame build on their site and this time it is long-time Cruiser Revolution reader Bam’s custom frame.

Check out the specs:

Head Tube: 75 degrees
Seat Tube: 70 degrees
Top Tube: 22″
Chain Stay: 15″
BB Height: 14″
Standover: 6″

If you look closely, you’ll notice some very distinctive forks on this setup…there’s an extra 2″ on the fork leg. A definite nod to old school Bottema forks.

The process

Bam had been shopping around for a custom builder but found most of his options were too expensive or too limited in geometry options.  He decided to give FBM a call, although I think he was a little apprehensive given John Paul Roger’s recent comments about cruisers  in an article in DIG magazine (he called them goofy, etc.)  Despite his initial concerns, FBM was on board with the build.

Bam said:

The FBM plan gives you an online form to check the available options, they offer to do anything you want, then some discussion, send them half of the money, then they send you a drawing to approve.  The price includes shipping and it didn’t cost extra for a 24″ model. They send photos of the process as it happens.

According to Bam, FBM’s custom prices are some of the best/lowest out there. He took the time to check out a bunch of different builders, so I believe him.

Can’t wait to see this all built up.
