TwoFourFlat Part 4 drops this December

The 4th installment of the TwoFourFlat video series is set to drop December 9th.

Featuring Danny Sirkin and Joe Cicman, these vids never disappoint.

Whether it’s throwing down serious flatland moves on a Specialized 24 or breaking out a 26″ Volume Sledgehammer just to see what it can do, these guys know how to mix things up to keep it fresh.

And it looks like the guys are back at it again. This time on a Sunday Wave-C.

In the lead up to the release date, Danny and Joe have put together a couple of trailers to whet our appetite.

The second is my favorite of the two.

Can’t wait to check this out!

Cranx: shreddin’ in Syracuse

Had a chance to ride Cranx Bike Park in Syracuse, New York a week and a half ago and came away smiling.

Built in the spirit of other indoor bike parks like Ray’s MTB and Joyride 150, it has a little something for everyone.  From a pumptrack, to jump lines to skatepark/street setups to the newly opened bowl…you can amuse yourself for hours.

Which I did.

Showing up on an unseasonably warm day, the park wasn’t as busy as I suspected it might be at this time of year. But that didn’t take away from the fun of the session. Upon getting the usual paperwork handled (waivers, etc.) by Dale, I was told that Matt, one of the guys on staff there, would give me a tour and show me around.

Definitely a pleasant surprise….and definitely something more bike parks should do.

Matt was laid back and a great tour guide…giving tips on lines, pointing out “escape routes” (if you had to get out of harm’s way) and making sure I had a good feel for the park and what it had to offer.

This run in the bottom left of this group of photos was probably my favorite line in the place. Starting at an elevated part of the park it sent you down into a banked turn and than into another banked turn in the opposite direction with a couple small jumps thrown in for good measure. Once you get used to it and hit with a little speed it becomes superfun.

The wooden bowl was definitely a good time too.

Tons of stuff to ride for sure with many updates and refinements already in the planning stages. (An outdoor dirt jump area has already been roughed for example.)

In the event that you break a bike part or need something for your bike, there’s also a satellite store for local shop, Advance Cyclery (you can see a bit in the left side of the top photo) to help you out.

All in all, definitely a cool place to check out if you’re in the area.

Bonus tip: when you’re done riding and have built up a healthy appetite, check out Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in town. Billed as a “honky tonk rib joint” it is a must-see/stop if you’re into bar-b-que….sooo good!

Jim C’s been putting in work

Never a slouch in the riding department, Sunday Bike’s Jim Cielencki has busted out a couple of really good pics in the past few weeks.

The first one that caught my attention is one taken at the Fun, Fun, Fun Fest in Austin, Texas.

According to the caption that ran with the  photo (taken by Sandy Carson) on the ESPN site, “This was one of the first flairs he has done on a 24″ bike in a few years, but he got it done with ease.”

No kidding.

The second is this carve on what looks like an almost impossible tranny (complete with skate stoppers at the bottom!).

Jim gets it done.

Great pics all around.

Not only do they show the high level that Jim’s riding at but also the versatility (and durability!) of the Wave C he’s doing these tricks on.

Hope to see more pics* like this.

4 more years…of Cruiser Revolution!

Oh boy…has it been four years already?

It really does blow my mind how quick the time goes.

I want to thank everybody for the support over these past four years.

I really appreciate the great comments, pictures, and emails that help this site what it is today.

Let’s keep this going for four more years…and beyond.

(Yes, it’s true…I have used this image before. But it happens to be one of my favorites and the four beer glasses seem to go with the 4-year anniversary theme…so I hope you’ll forgive me.)

Nifty, nifty looks who’s 50

Bill Allen, star of stage and screen, most famous for his role as small-town BMXer done good Cru Jones in the movie Rad, turns 50 this week.

Whatever your thoughts on the cult classic, you can’t deny the iconic status of Cru Jones in the BMX community. Love him or hate him, everyone knows who Cru Jones is and the man who played him, Bill Allen.

And, in some kind of cosmic convergence,  I also learned today that McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish is also enjoying it’s 50th birthday this year.

Coincidence?

Who’s to say….but I always seem to jones for a Filet-O-Fish or a viewing of Rad at the strangest times.

Like the middle of the night.

Maybe that explains their enduring popularity.

You just never know when the craving will strike you.

But when it does, whether it’s the sandwich or the movie, nothing else will do.

Introducing Beelzebike the 20 666 ‘er

With all the  cruisers popping out of the woodwork from non-BMX companies, Buddy Sardenga  thought he would drop us a line to show us what he had custom built  a few months ago.

Buddy said he loved his 24″ Liquid so much that he wanted a 26″ that felt similar but rode smoother.

So he contacted Matt at Stout bikes (outside of Houston) to talk to him about his plans.

Buddy kept the same 74 degree head tube angle and 72 degree seat tube angle (from the Liquid frame) but bumped up the top tube from 22″ to 23.1″, the chainstays from 14.25″ to 15.1″, the seat tube from 9.15″to 11.5″, and the bottom bracket from 12.7″to 13.75″.

According to Buddy, it’s amazing to ride, feels like his Liquid but a smoother ride (which is exactly what he wanted).

He also asked Matt at Stout to put a devil head on the head tube but Matt did him one better than that and gave the bike it’s own set of devil horns!

Beelzebike the 20 666 ‘er was born.

Dig & The Albion: keeping print relevant

I had the opportunity to pick up a couple issues of The Albion during my recent trip to the west coast and I was frankly blown away by how good of a magazine it was.

Chock full of great interviews with legends like Bob Haro to modern-day shredders like Van Homan. And these were not the typical cookie cutter interviews so typical today…you can tell the guys behind The Albion are trying to raise the level of BMX journalism (if there is such a thing). Going a little deeper than just the surface stuff and giving you a real sense about the ‘whole person’ being interviewed and not just their persona they show to the BMX world.

Perhaps influenced by The Albion’s growing notoriety, DIG has really stepped up their game as well.

Their latest installment, #90, is called “The Legends” issue. Featuring four collectible covers, one each of: Brian Foster, Ruben Alcantara, Joe Rich, and Van Homan.

Like The Albion, this latest issue of Dig is filled with great interviews of the four legends on the cover, along with the “people, places, and events that have inspired and shaped BMX and [Dig] magazine since [the] first issue in 1993”. The magazine does a great job of both looking back and also capturing the energy of the current moment in BMX.

In a time when print seems to be looked on as something bordering on irrelevant — given the reach and immediacy of online and video — it’s good to see people putting the time and effort into the print medium and keeping it fresh, real and something that can still move and inspire us.

Picture this: BMX Cruisers Flickr group

Today I stumbled on a cool Flickr group called BMX Cruisers.

The “About” section has this description:

This group contains pictures of people having fun with BMX cruisers. The main focus is on the salad days of 26″ cruisers, but two four peeps are welcome too.

It’s a pretty cool representation of the different facets of cruiser riding. There’s a bit of everything in this Flickr group: from flatland, to street, to pool riding, even just bombing the streets.

You might recognize a few familiar faces on it too.

Like Trent Brocker above.

Or Joseph Moody below.

Good to see pics of those guys tearing things up.

Heck, here’s another pic of Trent…it’s been a while since we’ve had a flatland pic on here.

Stolen Bikes debuts Saint XLT at Interbike

Stolen Bikes got our attention last year when they introduced the Stolen Saint 24 at Interbike.

The Stolen Saint was a solid first effort:  modern freestyle geometry, tough components (for a mid-level bike) and a tri-moly frame (which is common at this price point).

For 2013, Stolen has upped the ante a bit with the Saint XLT. On display at this year’s Interbike tradeshow, the Saint XLT showed that Stolen might just be serious about this 24″ game.

Sharing the same geometry as last year’s Saint model, the Stolen gang have made this version’s frame and fork 100% cro-mo. And with a nod to the way that many people are running their bars today, Stolen has also outfitted the XLT with 8.25″ handlebars.

I believe the headset and bottom bracket have also been updated to new sealed versions as well (but don’t quote me on that).

Nice to see Stolen taking a great new 24″ option and making it even better!

Should be in stores in the next month or so. Available in Black with Chrome (as shown above) and Matte Copper with Silver.

Porkchop BMX, Bullseye Cycle and VintageBMX.com are sponsoring a cruiser-only build off starting tomorrow, September 18.

The best part of this build off is (besides checking out all the awesome builds) is that Porkchop is giving away a fully built up Skyway 24 XL in a random drawing out of all the people that submit a completed bike.
