4130 Subway Series is pure BMX

14 10 2010

These days with riders going off at the X-Games, the Dew Tour and in crazy web edits it’s easy to forget the simpler aspects of BMX.

Like cruising the neighborhood with friends.

Nothing quite replaces the joy of roaming the streets, hitting spots and feeling free as you roll along on your bike.

The 4130 Club has captured all those things in their monthly rides.

This is BMX in its purest form.

Respect.

American Dad gets RAD!

12 10 2010

He’s nothing next to Bart Taylor.

But it turns out that American Dad didn’t forget his time in the lumberyard either.

Guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

Turn heads with Trickstar-inspired 24

9 10 2010

If you’ve ever thought about a Trickstar-inspired cruiser, or were a fan of Woody Itson‘s pink Trickstar back in the day, this may be the bike for you. Check out the front end in the pictures below for the obvious Hutch Trickstar influence.

Japan’s online BMX store, W-Base teamed up with x-girl (a clothing company) to create this limited edition cruiser. Only 100 were made and they have been available since April from online store Calif.

Two versions are available:

Neon pink with white forks

Matte white with pink forks

There are silver, blue and black components throughout on both versions.

A side order of fun: the 24″ sidehack

9 09 2010

Take a 24″ cruiser, a spare wheel, some scrap metal and a razor scooter…weld them together..what do you get?

An old school sidehack.

Looks like the Finestones, Brian and son Finn, know how to have a good time.

Check out this video: to see the Finestone’s sidehack project in action.

Free to do what you want to do

3 09 2010

Hard to believe that Labor Day weekend is already here.

Time to make the most of it.

Hope you can find some free time this weekend to do what you want to do.

To ride.

And have a good time.

(This clip always makes me think of Kevin Jones in the classic Wheelies video.)

Every picture tells a story

20 08 2010

I don’t even know where to begin with this photo.

Taken during Trent B’s (goride09) recent Golden Gate Bridge ride, it’s such a classic picture.

From the the trick itself (when’s the last time you saw someone uncork a bar endo?), the Golden Gate Bridge in the background to the extended hand for extra style points…

This pic has got it all.

So good.

Den Dowling is the man behind the camera. Check out his Flickr photostream for more pics of Trent and the Golden Gate Bridge ride.

SE heads into 2011 with classic style

4 08 2010

Maybe I’m an old school fool after all.

SE bikes has been releasing pictures of their soon-to-be-released 2011 lineup and this 24″ Quadangle looptail is one that I can’t take my eyes off of.

Gold anodized components, tall handlebars and skinwall tires…it hits all the right buttons for me.

Whoever said that “looking good is half the battle” must be right because I have no idea what the geometry or weight of this bike is and yet I still want it.

DMR gets some skin in the game

20 07 2010

Summer’s here and people are showing more skin.

Your bike should be no different.

Ready to take the plunge and rock the skinwall tire?

A good option might be the DMR Supermoto, available in wire and kevlar. Technically a MTB dirt jumping tire, it seems like it would be a great option for a 24″ BMX.  2.1 inches wide with a low profile  it would be at home at skateparks,  trails and race tracks. It’s relatively lightweight too.

Not sure how widely available this tire is in North America (DMR is based out of the UK) but their site shows both U.S. and Canada distribution so you should be able to get it if your bike shop deals with one of the listed distributors.

For more on my one-man crusade to bring back the skinwall tire, check out  Is it time to show some skin again? and Showing some skin in Utah.

Update: The 24″ version of this tire is available in wire only. The 26″ version is available in both wire and kevlar.

There might be a trend here…

15 07 2010

Looks like there might be more kids traveling in style.

Check out Matt Shelley on a classic Redline cruiser with his daughter riding co-pilot.

Can’t help but wonder if all these kids riding co-pilot with their Dads are going to graduate to sidehacks when they get a little older. This might be a bigger comeback for sidehacks than previously imagined…

Edward Koenning’s blog is addictive

8 07 2010

I have been checking out Edward Koenning‘s blog, When are you going to get a real bike? for a little while now and I have to say I’m getting pretty hooked.

A big part of his blog is digging up vintage BMX magazine pictures/spreads and commenting on them. I often find myself tripping down memory lane when I read one of his posts. I start remembering where I was when I saw or read it, how I devoured every word of the mag (keep in mind this was before the Internet) and how much it had an influence on me.

I was pretty stoked to see him pull out this gem recently. An awesome berm slide by RL Osborn from BMX Action‘s “24 Wars” cruiser shootout article.

I was pretty stoked on this spread too. Eddie Fiola with a perfect table top air (on vert!) and “The Culligan Man”  doing a big jump on a race cruiser to see how it would hold up.

If you’ve been into BMX for a while, When are you going to get a real bike? is definitely worth checking out.
