Sneak Peek: 2014 We The People Atlas 24

28 08 2013

After a two-year hiatus, We The People has brought back a 24-inch into its lineup (for 2014).

Going by the name, “The Atlas”, We The People’s new 24″ is a bit of a departure from the 2011 Avenger.

Whereas the 2011 edition sported geometry similar to the Sunday Model-C (high bottom bracket,  shorter top tube), the 2014 edition is reminiscent of the specs/geometry found on the Liquid Feedback frame (moderately high bottom bracket, longer top tube).

Standover height: 9.7″

The frame is full 4130 cro-mo with removable pivots/guides and integrated chain tensioners.

The fork is a Salt Plus (Magic 24) that features Sanko tubing, CNC steerer and investment cast drops.

Hoping to get a closer look at this at Interbike.

Big wheel bonanza in September BMX Plus

22 08 2013

On again and off again, running hot and cold on cruisers, it’s an ongoing theme with BMX Plus magazine.

One minute they’re showing some love for cruisers, the next they’re running a cover story called “Cruising into Oblivion: The Death of the 24“.

The BMX world’s longest running magazine can be a cruel mistress.

It’s enough to make a grown man cry.

Now in the latest issue (September), it looks like Plus is trying to kickstart the love affair again.

With a coverline that calls September “The Big Issue” and “Race and Freestyle Cruisers put to the test” getting top billing you just know something’s up.

BMX Plus Big IssueInside the magazine, they have–be still my heart–a freestyle cruiser shootout!

Granted, we suggested that they do this way back in 2010 but it’s nice to see it finally happening.

The DK Cygnus, the Sunday Model-C and Stolen Saint are all reviewed, complete with some pretty good riding shots.

BMX Plus Freestyle Cruiser ShootoutOn the race side of things, Plus takes the Redline Proline 24 out for a test drive.   A solid review with, again, some good riding shots.

To cap things off and round out the big wheel bonanza, there is a DK ad on the backcover, featuring its Sentry 24.

24in DK Sentry adWill this renewed love for the cruiser last this time?

I guess we’ll have to watch the newstand to find out.

Sneak Peek: 2014 Sunday Model-C

17 08 2013

Sunday teamed up with Defgrip yesterday to preview the 2014 lineup of Sunday Bikes.

The ground-breaking Model-C is still in the lineup and looks better than ever.

Take a sneak peek of what’s in store from Sunday in 2014.

The scoop on the GT Interceptor 24

8 08 2013

Crazy Al Cayne caught up with GT Bicycles product manager, Jason Halverson recently at Trumbull BMX to get the inside line on the new Interceptor 24 from GT.

I was stoked to see Al’s bike check post because my interest has been piqued ever since the ads started appearing in PULL magazine touting the “100% Chromoly” Interceptor Race Line.

GT Interceptor 24

Turns out that GT has taken some elements of its freestyle frames, like the dropouts and the larger downtube, and worked them into the Interceptor.  This is In addition to design tweaks to reduce flex and keep it race-ready. All in an effort to make a bike that’s equally at home at the track and the trails.

GT Interceptor dropout

With S&M and Standard pretty much cornering the chromoly race frame market, it’s cool to see a mainline race brand re-embrace its roots and put out a quality chromoly race bike.

What do you think?

Check out http://www.BMXHOOD.com for more pictures and details from Al Cayne and the Interceptor 24.

A nice backdrop makes all the difference

17 07 2013

Most dirt jumping pictures have similar backdrops…trees, mounds of dirt…in Henderson, Nevada the backdrop is a little different.

This local spot, the Monkey Face jump, kinda has an ugly name, but it sure makes up for it with its beautiful scenery.

SE Big Ripper: not just for cruisin’

29 06 2013

A BMX bike rolling on 29″ wheels might not strike you as one suitable for shredding on….

Wheelies? Sure.

Kickouts off of curb cuts? Why not.

Shredding dirt jumps? Probably not….right?

Well, it looks like Todd Lyons might have some other ideas about that.

Check out these shots of Todd kicking out the jams at the dirt jumps aboard the SE Big Ripper. (They’ve been circulating around the internet for the past couple days and definitely caught my attention.)

Big Ripper flatty Todd LyonsWho knew that you could shred like this on the Big Ripper?

And imagine the speed you could carry on these big wheels too.

Radness.

15 seconds of motivation

26 06 2013

Nothing like a Jeremy Combs edit to make you want to get out and ride some dirt.

Even if it is only 15 seconds long.

S&M releases 22 and 24″ ATF frames

20 06 2013

Well, that didn’t take long.

Back in April, S&M bikes was dropping hints and teaser photos about its prototype 22 and 24″ ATF frames.

Now this week comes news from the S&M camp that both frames are now available.

First impression? These frames look very nice!

S&M 22

Available in Black, Trans Green, Trans Red; these frames are  full-on head turners.

Check the S&M site for full specs on both the 22″ and 24″ models.

S&M is investing big time into the bigger wheeled BMX scene…with two new school 24s, two 22″ frames and an already popular race 24…S&M is definitely not playing around!

A new Liquid Feedback frame on the way?

14 06 2013

Liquid Bikes is dropping hints that an updated Liquid Feedback frame might be on the way.

The hints started trickling in early last week with a teaser shot of what they called “a next generation Liquid Feedback prototype frame.”

Proto-next gen Liquid Feedback frame

That was quickly followed a few days later with a pic of it all built up.

Liquid Feedback next gen build

Accompanying the photo was the following write-up:

Liquid Bikes is excited to announce that we’re teaming up with our California brothers – Solid BMX. Hand crafted in California… just like the trails. More info, details, and availability coming soon!

This is pretty exciting news, given that Liquid has been on a bit of a hiatus since selling out of the last of its frames a while back.

A favorite among big wheel bad-asses like Buddy Sardenga, CMC and owner/operator, Jeremy Combs, it was sad to see the availability of Liquid Feedback frames dry up some time ago.

Thankfully, it appears that dry spell is about to change and Liquid frames are going to start flowing back to the public very soon.

Looking forward to hearing more about this story as it develops.

Using color for that custom look

7 06 2013

By Ed Vandermolen

Even though there seems to be an almost endless supply of color options these days (for both bikes and components) sometimes you run into a situation where, for whatever reason, your preferred color  is not offered as an option by the manufacturer.

What’s a rider to do?

For the enterprising sort, this is their opportunity to customize their ride and get the work done to make their bike something that really stands out from the crowd. Whether it’s rawing out a frame or getting a custom color, this is where a rider’s individuality can really shine.

I’ve come across a couple examples of this lately that really caught my eye.

The first one is Nic Galvan’s custom candy-apple red Sunday Model-C.  I spotted this from a distance at Austin’s 9th street trails and thought at first it might be a Trans-Red S&M Dirt Bike.  Upon closer inspection, and chatting with Nic, I learned that he had it custom painted. The picture doesn’t do it justice but this bike looked so cool!  A headturner for sure!

Nick's red Sunday

The second is Jesse Klein’s DK Professional V2 24. (Jesse actually works at DK so it’s kinda cool that he’s still looking for ways to add some “extra cool” to his rides.)

In addition to going for a custom yellow color, Jesse cut some vinyl to make some one-off DK logos, gave it a quick hit with a sandblaster, then some powder coat to essentially “brand” his bicycle (vs. the traditional frame stickers). You can read a bit more about the process in this thread on BMXMuseum. It looks so trick!

Here’s a shot of the complete bike.

Pretty stoked on these rides.

Hope to see more of this kind of customization in the future!
