Checking in on the 24s

The 24s may not get the same love as the 20s in the BMX section of Interbike but there was still plenty to check out this year.

Stolen featured the chrome version of their Saint XLT. The geometry has been tweaked/improved this year so an already great bike has gotten even better.

We The People showcased another favorite, the 24″ Atlas. The added “Wow” factor of the candy apple red paint job for 2017 was in full effect.  Looking good.

Haro also got in the act with their entry-level Downtown 24. Those look-at-me green tires are hard to miss.

SE showcased the metallic red version of their lineup mainstay, the So Cal Flyer.

Free Agent featured two 24″ cruisers. The entry-level race cruiser, the Ambush 24.

And their more freestyle-y 24″ Ratio.

By the way, I would love to see the Ratio get a bit more of an update –beyond the cosmetic — in the future.  (Those bars are looking mighty short for one thing.)

Sadly Redline wasn’t at the show (I was hoping to check out the Asset 24 and the updated PL-26) and GT didn’t feature a 24.

But GT did have something else that was super cool to check out.

2017 WTP Atlas gets some Wow factor

The 2017 We The People (WTP) Atlas is getting a little added “Wow factor” this model year with a new candy apple red paint job.

Topped off with chrome and polished parts from WTP and SaltPlus, this 24″ is a real looker.

It’s a bit reminiscent, in colorway terms, of the 2011 Avenger.

Of course The Avenger,  as you might recall from last year’s Interbike coverage, has now morphed into a 26″ retro-style cruiser in the WTP lineup.

But I digress…

The Atlas, besides its eye-catching new candy apple colorway, hasn’t changed much in the geo/specs department since the previous model year.

But in the case of the Atlas, there isn’t much need to.

It sports a full cromo frame, fork and handlebar.

The specs are also on point:

  • Head tube: 74 degrees
  • Seat tube angle: 72 degrees
  • Top tube length: 22″
  • Chain stay: 14.6″
  • BB height: 12.7″
  • Stand over height: 9.7″

The roomy 22″ top tube, high-but-not-too-high bb, and short-ish chain-stays suggest this might be just the ticket if you’re looking for a more trails-oriented 24 (the Kenda “Small Block 8” tires are also another hint in this direction).

It’s hard to go wrong with this bike…and with its eye-catching new colorway, it’s kinda hard to resist.

HB crew tries out the 24″ Quad Freestyle

Huntington Beach (HB), California has been an iconic flatland spot since the glory days of Martin Aparijo and Woody Itson busting out cherrypickers for the magazines.

Today, that spirit still lives on.

Every Tuesday, a crew of old school flatlanders meet up to bust out some flatland moves.

Apparently an SE 24″ Quadangle Freestyle ended up there for one of these sessions and the crew ended up busting out some quality flatland on it.

2017 Stolen Saint XLT & Zeke XLT

The ever-popular Stolen Saint XLT and its newer 26″ cousin, the Zeke XLT have been updated for 2017.

The Stolen Saint XLT retains its main selling points: full chromoly construction, 48 Spline Cranks and double-walled rims.

What’s new this year is a slightly revised geometry.

For 2017, the Saint XLT sports the following specs:

  • HT: 74.25°
  • ST: 70°
  • TT: 21.75″
  • CS: 15.0″
  • SO: 9.6″
  • BB: 13.30″

Available in Satin White with Camo accents or Chrome Plated with Black accents (both versions look pretty trick in my opinion).

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of tanwall tires and the Saint XLT has those too…on their also ever-popular Joint tires.

Zeke XLT

The 26″ Zeke XLT stays essentially the same geometry-wise to its 2016 predecessor (You can check out the full specs here).

It also retains its full chromoly construction and sealed components.

What has changed is its look.

New for 2017 is the choice of a shiny red or flat black colorway (both with black components).

Some well-spec’d bikes with killer looks…hard to go wrong here folks.

Rockin’ and Rippin’

Travis Barker is currently out on tour with his band, Blink-182.

And what do you think he’s been doing between all the rock shows and travel?

He’s been shredding on a SE Public Enemy Big Ripper!

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Travis Barker on a Big Ripper…in fact, Travis even collaborated with SE on a collab Big Ripper a couple years back.

Good to see he’s keeping the shred sessions going…even when he’s on tour!

Truth BMX gets street with new 26″

Truth BMX have established themselves as an up-and-coming race brand with a full lineup of race-ready frames and components, including the eye-catching Main Event 24.

Now, with their strong race reputation intact, Truth BMX is turning their sights to the streets.

With race bikes being so purpose-specific these days, many riders opt to have a second bike to keep their race rides from getting thrashed when they’re out getting wild in the streets (or steezy at the trails).

It’s that line of thinking that brought about Truth BMX’s street lineup.

Of particular interest to us however is this street lineup includes a 26″ frame!

Available in red, blue and black; the “Silver Spring” frames are full cromoly and feature double-butted top and bottom tubes.

Other notables? How about removable brake mounts and clearance for 2.4″ tires.

First look: 2017 GT Performer Pro 26

It may be “throwback thursday” but the 2017 GT Performer Pro 26 looks much more than just a mere throwback…it’s the classic GT Performer re-imagined as modern-day 26″ cruiser.

BMXUnion.com got the sneak peek of the 2017 GT lineup earlier this week and part of that lineup is this super-sized version of the GT Performer.

Available in blue or white, it features a full cro-mo frame, fork and handlebar.

performer-24-gt-bicycles-2017-bmx-bike-whiteAnd while it has been updated with modern touches like 990-style brakes and a threadless headset there are still plenty of retro nods to keep the old schoolers happy.

Such notables include the classic Power Series cranks…

…and the iconic pierced seat tube and platform.

If I was being nit-picky I would say I kinda wish they would’ve run a caliper brake on the back of the fork …Eddie Fiola-style…to round out the look.

But that’s an easy fix.

Face it, if you’re the old school type that would be interested in the Performer Pro…you’ve probably got an old Dia-Compe MX-1000 kicking around the garage anyway.

All in all, a cool “retro-inspired” bike from GT.

26″ Morales flatland frame in chrome

You might remember earlier this month we checked out a unique custom frame that I spotted on BMX Museum.

You might also recall that I prefaced it with “I kid you not”…that’s because it was a 26″ Morales Flatland frame!

Yes, a frame just like 90s flatland icon Jesse Puente used to ride…only much, much bigger.

Well, I just got word from the owner that he’s got it back from being chromed and it is looking great.

Sneak Peek: 2017 Sunday Model C

Sunday dropped the details of their 2017 complete bikes yesterday and the bike near and dear to our hearts, the  Model C, is still making its presence felt in the lineup.

New for this year is a chrome(!) frame to add a little shine to the proceedings.

*Which appear to be the new version of the tire formerly known as the “Chase Hawk tire”.

The frame is not full chromoly (chromoly downtube and headtube only)….but if previous model years are any indication, this bike is still very durable. And at a $429 US pricepoint, a great deal.
