Mongoose serious about racing comeback

Back in December, we got word that Mongoose was making a racing comeback.

They kicked things off with a line of affordable, race-ready complete bikes that were available at mongoose.com and Amazon.

Now, it appears that Mongoose is upping the ante and expanding their race line —from four to eight models–for the 2018 model year.

According to a writeup in the Wisconsin State Journal, one reason for the expansion of their BMX category, specifically the race category, is the increased exposure BMX racing has received since its Olympic debut.

Another reason, according to Brian Baldis, Director of Product Development for Mongoose, is:

“…parents like to put their kids in those kind of formatted sports, versus freestyle, which is still the bulk of the BMX marketplace.

“Racing is seeing some uptick because it has a time, location, adult supervision and feels very much like Little League in that way. It’s been great for youths getting back on bikes in that way.”

That’s great to hear, considering the gloom and doom on Internet Forums over the past few years when the topic of participation rates came up.

Will this translate into more Mongooses at the local track?

Time will tell.

But in any event, it’s great to have this iconic brand back in the BMX race scene again.

Feeling Moody on a Monday

How’s this for a Monday pick-me-up?

I saw this picture a while back and filed it away in a mental file to use it in the future. When it popped up again in Moody’s Facebook feed, I knew I had to share.

Joe’s backstory makes this even more rad.

As you might remember from a previous post, it was through riding BMX that Joseph Moody discovered that he had cancer…and it was by riding BMX that he was able to beat it.

Moody is someone that not only kicks ass on a bike but he’s kicked cancer’s ass as well.





Cru Jones: the UCI doesn’t like your type

The movie Rad, a cult classic for BMXers of all stripes, was way ahead of it’s time in some ways.

(Watching the story of the small-town kid with dreams of racing in the big race is a rite of passage for most riders.)

Sure, the racing depicted was a bit wack but that sorta added to the movie’s charm.

Now looking back, it’s interesting to see how prophetic it was.

The giant start hill of Helltrack looks like it might have been the inspiration for the big starting hills of today’s SX tracks.

Mongoose bikes were “going to be in every department store across the nation” (can’t remember the exact line)….which seemed ridiculous at the time but now ,of course, you can visit any Wal-Mart and pick up a Mongoose bicycle.

And the way the big corporate interests would try to stamp down the energetic upstart/hometown kid, Cru Jones, from making a go of it.

Who could forget, Cru, the rider in the hockey helmet and jeans (before the big final, when he finally gets some proper racing duds)  practicing and then racing against the “factory hot-shots”.

Now it seems like the UCI is ready to pull a similar move on riders that have the audacity to show up for a race in jeans.

According to the new UCI rule book:

The following items are not permitted for BMX pants:
– One piece skin suits
– Tight fitted pants that needs to be stretched in order to cover
the legs
– Lycra pants
– Track and Field pants /jogging pants
– Road/Track cycling pants
Denim / Jeans

It just seems like a step too far.

Jeans have been part of the “first race day” uniform of just about every BMX racer (minus the hockey helmet) since the sport began.

Is nothing sacred anymore?

Cool pics from Mongoose…just be KOS

Mongoose posted some cool cruiser-related pics on their Facebook feed today including this one by Mongoose rider Chris Akrigg letting loose on his KOS Kruiser.

Classic style on a classic bike.

Chris is well known in the MTB world for his big, creative moves. Kinda makes you wonder why Mongoose hasn’t set him up with one of the Mongoose Thrive 24s (previously discussed on CR last year).  I think you’d really see Chris go off on one of those bikes…

Mongoose also posted this great vintage ad for the Mongoose Two/Four, with the caption, “The original Kos Kruiser. Did you miss it?

So cool.

Probably the coolest pic of the day though is the one featuring the custom Kos Kruiser they built for Jeff ‘Kos’ Kosmala’s wife, Vicky. It’s painted pink  in recognition of Vicky’s battle with breast cancer and her successful recovery.

So stoked on this. Nice work Mongoose.





Eric Rupe: retirement isn’t an option

After a successful Pro racing career in the 80s, Eric Rupe “retired” due to the dissatisfaction he felt with his long-time sponsor, Mongoose and what they were offering him to renew his contract.

But apparently “retirement” wouldn’t take. Eleven months after officially retiring he was back on the national scene competing. And he hasn’t stopped since.

Currently terrorizing the older cruiser class ranks, Rupe can always be counted on to be a tough competitor every time he hits the track. With more than 30 years experience under his belt, you can bet he’s got more moves than anybody else out there.

Respect to “Big Daddy” Eric Rupe…still in the mix long after all these years.





Top ten of 2011

Wow, it seems like 2011 flew by.

So before we ring in the new year, let’s check out the top ten things that went down in 2011.

10. Sunday and S&M kicked off the year by introducing two of the most of the popular frames out there right now: the Sunday Wave-C and S&M 24″ Dirt Bike.

9. This was quickly followed by news that a lot of people had been waiting for: 24″ forks with front brake mounts. S&M was first to market with their 24 “Pitchforks with 990 mounts which was quickly followed by Sunday’s 24″ forks with 990 mounts (although they were testing prototypes much earlier).

8. Some great 24″ flatland vids surfaced almost immediately after from Joe Cicman and Danny Sirkin. (Could this be related somehow to #9?) Heck, even flatland legend Bobby Fisher surfaced a few months later riding flatland on a Sunday Model-C.

7. Low-rise traditional handlebars for cruisers dying off.  The tall handlebar trend is firmly established in the freestyle end of 24″ bmx but it looks like it starting to take hold in racing too. MattyJo Shelley (of BMXActionOnline) tried it out on his race bike in a special guest post and he found taller bars had advantages for racing too.

6. “Older” guys  continued to make their presence felt in BMX on their 24″ bikes.  From the older cruiser classes in racing to a skatepark rider proving that age is just a number it’s great to see that there is no age cut-off for having fun!

5. DK introduced a line of bikes in Wal-Mart, including a 24″ version of the General Lee. Is this good or bad for BMX? The jury is still out.

4.  Mongoose, Stolen and InDust introduced new 24s to the scene. Great to see companies responding to the demand for bigger wheeled BMXs.

3. Cruiser Revolution celebrated its 3-year anniversary this year. A great milestone and a testament to the great cruiser community that is continuing to grow.

2.  The 4130 rides. I was lucky enough to participate in the 4130 Sin Series ride in Las Vegas back in September and it was one of the best times I have ever had on my bike.  Bombing the streets with a couple hundred of your fellow BMXers is something everyone has to do at least once.

1. Having a good time on your bike. Sure, it’s fun to debate the pros and cons of how tall your handlebars are, talk about the latest parts and comment on the latest video edit but when it comes right down to it, when you’re out there riding none of that really matters. Whether its with your bros, your kids or just by yourself, you can leave your worries behind and let the good times roll as soon as you step on those pedals.

It’s good to be the boss of Dialled Bikes

If being the boss of a BMX company isn’t cool enough, Mike Wong over at Dialled Bikes ups the coolness quotient just a bit more by designing a sweet looking custom cruiser for his own personal ride.

I spotted this on Fastlane BMX magazine’s website recently and was pretty stoked on it.  Not only does it have a nice old school Mongoose-style zinc plated finish but there’s a bunch of other things going on with this bike that make it unique and customized to Mike’s tastes.

Why it’s unique

It’s made with 853 Reynolds Cro-Moly, extra thin tubing and a slacker than “normal”  head angle.

Why did he go with a slacker head angle?

According to Mike (in his Fastlane interview) it’s because today’s geometry is getting too twitchy:

…with tracks getting faster, jumps getting steeper and berms getting slicker, I actually think they are taking geometry in the wrong direction.

Therefore, on my frame, I’ve made the head angle one degree slacker than the production cruisers (71 degrees instead of 72), which actually makes it feel more stable over jumps and in turns. I may even go another degree slacker for the next iteration. *

While there are no plans to incorporate this slacker head angle into Dialed Bikes production models, Mike is going to continue to ride/race it to see how it performs. This is pretty big departure from current geometry, so it’s interesting to see Mike stepping up and experimenting with something new.
