Stricker steps up to a 22″…no joshin’

I had heard stories/rumours previously of Matt Beringer experimenting with a 22 but never could seem to find any evidence of it happening.

Well, it looks like another big name in the S&M alumni is taking the plunge…and this time S&M Bikes themselves is promoting the fact.

S&M introduces 24″ Trackmark race tire

This isn’t something I expected from S&M.

While their 22 inch tires have been receiving some noticeable buzz, it was a bit of a surprise to learn that S&M now offers a 24″ race tire called the Trackmark.

Available in two sizes, 24 X 1.75 and 24 x 2.1, the Trackmark is smooth, low-profile tire that looks like it would be perfectly at home on today’s groomed, hard-packed tracks.

Built with a kevlar bead and a lightweight casing, it’s clear that S&M has done their homework on this one.

Can’t wait to check these out up close.

The scoop on the GT Interceptor 24

Crazy Al Cayne caught up with GT Bicycles product manager, Jason Halverson recently at Trumbull BMX to get the inside line on the new Interceptor 24 from GT.

I was stoked to see Al’s bike check post because my interest has been piqued ever since the ads started appearing in PULL magazine touting the “100% Chromoly” Interceptor Race Line.

Turns out that GT has taken some elements of its freestyle frames, like the dropouts and the larger downtube, and worked them into the Interceptor.  This is In addition to design tweaks to reduce flex and keep it race-ready. All in an effort to make a bike that’s equally at home at the track and the trails.

With S&M and Standard pretty much cornering the chromoly race frame market, it’s cool to see a mainline race brand re-embrace its roots and put out a quality chromoly race bike.

S&M releases 22 and 24″ ATF frames

Well, that didn’t take long.

Back in April, S&M bikes was dropping hints and teaser photos about its prototype 22 and 24″ ATF frames.

Now this week comes news from the S&M camp that both frames are now available.

First impression? These frames look very nice!

Available in Black, Trans Green, Trans Red; these frames are  full-on head turners.

S&M is investing big time into the bigger wheeled BMX scene…with two new school 24s, two 22″ frames and an already popular race 24…S&M is definitely not playing around!





The secret to a good BMX name? It’s the S

In an article called The 50 Greatest BMX Logos, which ran in Complex magazine a couple of years ago, Taj Mihelich said,

There is definitely some connection between lightning and BMX. You can find lightning bolts on all kinds of BMX imagery. I think that maybe the very bones of BMX, chromoly steel, can only be created by a direct lightning strike.

This connection is especially true of BMX images from the 80s but still seems to noticeable to a certain extent today.

In a similar fashion, BMX is made up of a disproportionate number of brands that start with the letter “S”.

Maybe it’s due to the sport getting it’s start with kids riding Schwinn Sting Rays but it’s a little crazy how long the list is when you start to think about it.

I guess if you’re looking to start a BMX brand some time in the future, stack the odds in your favor with a name that starts with “S”…and maybe throw in some lightning bolts into the logo for good measure.





S&M unveils Speedwagon Cruiser frame

After much anticipation, S&M has unveiled its new Speedwagon race frames.  And while they have made some tweaks to the the 20 inch version’s geometry for the 24″ version they have stuck with the tried-and-true geo found on the 24″ 38 Special.

In terms of updates, Jay Skwarlo of S&M said they:

…ditched the mono stay and put the dropouts on a diet. We also got rid of the cable split cable stops and went with three guides.

Looks dialed.

Another thing that caught my eye was the addition of a new stock size, one with a 22″ top tube.  Definitely a plus for the bigger guys.

Color options are Gloss Black, Trans Red and Chrome.

Cro-mo continues its racing comeback

Back in March, we talked about the comeback that chromoly race forks were experiencing in the race community. Now with more and more people switching to chromoly forks, it seems like the a trend is starting to develop towards chromoly race frames.

Sure, chromoly frames have always been available from the industry stalwarts, S&M and Standard. But beyond those two companies the choices for “steel is real” advocates was noticeably slim.

That’s beginning to change.

In a recent Vintage BMX forum thread, a reader was showing off his SSquared chromoly cruiser prototype frame and said,

Now that they made this first cromo frame for me; I think it has reenergized their desire to do a full cromo run.

Which is pretty compelling when you consider that SSquared is one of the more popular race companies at the moment…they obviously think there is a market for these frames.

Other big names in the race community, like Supercross and MCS have also had cromo frames in their lineups for some time now  (the Bolt and Speedfreak respectively) despite the widespread use of aluminum frames in the race community.

And as further evidence of the chromoly trend, there are rumblings that GT and Mongoose are also testing out Chromoly race bikes.

Looks like we might have a cro-mo resurgence on our hands in the next few years. I for one am kinda looking forward to it.





New colors/graphics on the 24″ Dirt Bike

The guys at S&M have been busy lately, releasing a new batch of 24″ Dirt Bike frames to the public.

However, with this new batch they have switched things up a bit.

The frames now feature the O.G. Lowrider decal set (like the old 20″ Dirt Bikes sported for a time) and are available in black and green.

They look badass.





Spot the Cruiser Revolution sticker

I always find it interesting to see where Cruiser Revolution stickers will turn up.

I was especially amused to see one show up in this picture (found the other day on BMX Museum).

Turns out Rockabilly Jay from S&M put up his beloved custom 22″ TT 38 Special for sale on eBay and he used this promo picture to advertise it.

(Eagle-eyed readers will notice that this is the same bike we featured way back in 2010 on Cruiser Revolution.)

Before you ask, I’m not sure who the model/rider is…but I will say she has excellent taste in knee/shin protection.





S&M joins the 22″ movement for 2012

BMXUnion posted a great interview today with Chris Moeller of S&M Bikes talking about his company’s recent foray into the manufacturing of 22″ frames, forks, wheels and tires.

According to Chris, the motivation to create the new line was simply due to friends nagging him to do it:

If my friends hadn’t been so persistent about it, it would never have happened. Once I had one built up I thought it was cool and I had fun riding it

Earlier in the interview, he also said:

The idea of a slightly larger, more stable trail bike for older guys coming off an extended break from BMX or larger riders coming off MTB’s made a lot of sense to me.

In terms of geometry, while still being fine-tuned,  Chris said:

The geometry is about the same as a 20” but with a little more kicked back seat angle. The tires are 22” X 2.125” for now. It wasn’t too difficult scaling it to the larger wheels and we kicked the seat angle back for raising the seat up high to actually ride the bike. Since there are no preconceived TT lengths people are judging it by we didn’t have to worry about that. And if you go to the trails with the seat down it won’t make a difference anyway.

The release date for the 22″ Holmes (fitting name for it’s larger size, natch) is set for mid-summer along with a Revenge wheel-set and tire combo that will be sold separately.
