There’s a BMX storm brewing

This winter has been unrelenting in terms of storms, cold temps and all around crappy conditions.

BMXers in the northeast have been hit particularly hard by this nasty weather and are collectively just about ready to say good riddance to old man winter.

Thankfully, this weekend brings two big events that will put a spring in the step of BMXers of just about every stripe in the northeast.

The first is the annual Toronto BMX Jam. The unofficial kickoff to the contest season and an excuse for BMXers to get a bit of a BMX party going on, the Toronto BMX Jam is a contest that gets people’s stoke factor to go off the charts. Set up as part of the Toronto International Bicycle show (kind of like a mini-Interbike), it features the Toronto BMX Jam, a flatland contest, indoor racing (mostly MTB these days) and a jumping competition.

The riding is unbelievable, the crowd is loud and chances are that you’ll run into riding buddies you haven’t seen for ages. So much fun. I’ll be there Saturday and Sunday and if you have the chance I hope you will too…this is one of the most fun BMX events of the year.

The second big event is at Ray’s MTB Cleveland.

This coming weekend they will be hosting 3 (really) big names in BMX: Rick Moliterno, Harry Leary and Stu Thomsen.

That’s almost BMX royalty right there!

If you’re a BMX nerd like me, you know those guys have some stories to tell. Much respect for those dudes.

So if winter has got you down, these events might be the cure for what ails you. Check ’em out if you get a chance.

2B or not 2B: the return of Leigh & Hal B

If you rode in the 90s, chances are you probably wore a 2B Homecooked, Play or Useless t-shirt.

And a some point, you probably sported a Play clothing sticker on your bike.

And if you went to contests, you probably made it out to at least one Play contest.

In my case, I’m guilty of all three.

Play (and its predecessor 2B Homecooked) along with Useless, represented a more carefree time in BMX…before all the Dew Tours and X-Games madness took hold.

When Hal Brindley and Leigh Ramsdell decided to pursue other things, a little bit of that era went with them.

Check them out back in the 1998 in this classic ad for Props:

A couple of goofballs to be sure, but it was so fun you couldn’t help but be stoked on it.

Now, it looks like Hal and Leigh are “getting the band back together” to start printing some of those iconic t-shirts again.

They’re setting up shop under the oldscool banner but it looks like all the old favorites are coming back.

Looking forward to replacing my long-gone, but dearly missed, “I love sweet corn” tee.

4130 Subway Series hits the 3-year mark

Three years already…Wow.

The world famous 4130 Subway Series ride celebrates its 3-year anniversary tonight.

The 4130 Subway Series is pure BMX and that’s been the secret of its success. Looking back at a CR post talking about it in 2010, nothing’s changed:

….cruising the neighborhood with friends.

Nothing quite replaces the joy of roaming the streets, hitting spots and feeling free as you roll along on your bike.

The 4130 Club has captured all those things in their monthly rides.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a street rider, a racer, old school or new school…all are welcome and the positive vibe is contagious.

That being said, I’m kicking myself for not being down there with the 4130 Chromies for what I’m sure will be an epic ride.

I’m sure even while I’m typing this, people are already doing the final checks on their bikes and making their way down to the meet-up spot in Hollywood.

The main man behind the 4130 ride,The Mayor of Hollywood will be rolling on his sweet twin top tube Tribute 24, complete with a custom 3-year anniversary plate from Crit. (As you can see, Morty the guard dog will ensure no one messes with it before the ride begins.)

So if you’re riding tonight, be safe and have fun.

If you’re not riding, start thinking about when you can attend a 4130 ride in the future. This a must-do for any BMXer!

A ride with the Firemans Holiday Cruze

Stumbled across this video and thought I would share.

It’s a cool look at the 2010 Firemans Holiday Cruze, hosted by Firemans Texas Cruzer.

Austin has a healthy cruiser scene and this video shows its residents know that you don’t have to be busting out crazy moves to have a good time on your bike.

TwoFourFlat Part 4 drops this December

The 4th installment of the TwoFourFlat video series is set to drop December 9th.

Featuring Danny Sirkin and Joe Cicman, these vids never disappoint.

Whether it’s throwing down serious flatland moves on a Specialized 24 or breaking out a 26″ Volume Sledgehammer just to see what it can do, these guys know how to mix things up to keep it fresh.

And it looks like the guys are back at it again. This time on a Sunday Wave-C.

In the lead up to the release date, Danny and Joe have put together a couple of trailers to whet our appetite.

The second is my favorite of the two.

Can’t wait to check this out!

4 more years…of Cruiser Revolution!

Oh boy…has it been four years already?

It really does blow my mind how quick the time goes.

I want to thank everybody for the support over these past four years.

I really appreciate the great comments, pictures, and emails that help this site what it is today.

Let’s keep this going for four more years…and beyond.

(Yes, it’s true…I have used this image before. But it happens to be one of my favorites and the four beer glasses seem to go with the 4-year anniversary theme…so I hope you’ll forgive me.)

Nifty, nifty looks who’s 50

Bill Allen, star of stage and screen, most famous for his role as small-town BMXer done good Cru Jones in the movie Rad, turns 50 this week.

Whatever your thoughts on the cult classic, you can’t deny the iconic status of Cru Jones in the BMX community. Love him or hate him, everyone knows who Cru Jones is and the man who played him, Bill Allen.

And, in some kind of cosmic convergence, I also learned today that McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish is also enjoying it’s 50th birthday this year.

Coincidence?

Who’s to say….but I always seem to jones for a Filet-O-Fish or a viewing of Rad at the strangest times.

Like the middle of the night.

Maybe that explains their enduring popularity.

You just never know when the craving will strike you.

But when it does, whether it’s the sandwich or the movie, nothing else will do.

The Kos had a ‘stache

In a begone era, the moustache was sported by many BMX stars. Mike Miranda and Perry Kramer come to mind.

However, no one rocked it quite like Jeff “The Kos” Kosmala.

Now you may ask yourself, was the “Kos Stache” responsible for his domination of the cruiser class back in the day?

Was it that special something that got him play with the ladies?

It’s hard to say.

But this Movember, I’m hoping to capture some of that old school BMX magic by growing a Kos-inspired ‘stache.

Anybody else growing a moustache for Movember?

Today I stumbled on a cool Flickr group called BMX Cruisers.

The “About” section has this description:

This group contains pictures of people having fun with BMX cruisers. The main focus is on the salad days of 26″ cruisers, but two four peeps are welcome too.

It’s a pretty cool representation of the different facets of cruiser riding. There’s a bit of everything in this Flickr group: from flatland, to street, to pool riding, even just bombing the streets.
