The swan song for 24″ Chase Hawk tires?

18 12 2015

After so much teasing, buildup and finally, the introduction of a 24″ Chase Hawk tire…it seems like its days might be numbered.

In a dramatic sponsorship change, almost on par with Primo dropping the Blue Falcon years ago, Odyssey has dropped Chase Hawk from their team.

Understandably, the internets have been going crazy over the last 48 hours with the news.

With Chase off the team, it probably means his signature products are probably on their way out too.

So, if you’ve been on the fence about picking up a pair, you might want to jump on it sooner rather than later.

Sad news all around…although I think Chase is probably going to have no problem finding himself a new co-sponsor (He’s still reppin’ Cult, naturally.)

Maybe Odyssey will consider a 24″ Duggan tire to replace the Hawk tire?

It’s the least they could do in this situation.

Gearing up for a winter street session

11 12 2015

Even though we’ve been blessed with warm fall weather (in most parts of North America at least)  it’s just a matter of time before the really cold stuff starts to take hold.

And while the old standbys of indoor bike parks and heated parked garages are always good options during the winter…sometimes you’ve just got to keep it raw and have yourself a good ol’ fashioned street session.

But before you do that, you have to be prepared.

A big part of that preparation is…dressing in layers.

What layers you say?

Ant Bloch of Harvester Bikes has put together a video to highlight the essentials for winter street riding.

As Ant explains, you’ll want to make sure you have the following:

  • Gloves
  • Long-sleeve shirt
  • Hoodie
  • Dickies or Carhartt-style insulated jacket
  • High-top shoes
  • Jeans
  • Toque/Beanie

A solid list for sure…and given that Ant rides in Canadian winters…he’s got some real-world experience riding in the cold.

winter riding

I can’t disagree with any of his suggestions but I would add one more item to the list: a moisture-wicking shirt.

Use it under (or as a replacement for) the long-sleeve shirt he mentioned to keep you less sweaty once the session really gets going. (I’ve started adding this to my cold weather-riding gear and it has really made a difference.)

So now that you’ve got your cold weather-riding gear sorted…don’t let a winter forecast get you down…get out there and get riding!

Rollin’ with the 4130 Sin Series crew

25 09 2015

Beyond walking the aisles of Interbike, checking out the new bikes, parts and trends of the show…one of the high points of the week is meeting up with the crew behind the 4130 Sin City Series ride for night of fun, rolling through the streets of Vegas.

I had to miss it last year (because I had to fly back early for a wedding) but I had my fingers crossed that the stars would align and I would be able to ride this year.

Well, the stars did align.

And, like he has in the past, Mike Leonard came through for me with a bike I could borrow for the night, along with a lift to the meetup spot.

(That’s Mike on the right…not sure why our skin looks like we’re under heat lamps..must be the Vegas lights.)

The group was smaller this year (I heard there was  a race nearby that drew away a lot of people that would’ve participated) but it didn’t diminish the fun in the slightest.

It was good to catch up with Sal and Cactus, who I had rode with on previous rides.

The night was a blast…out in the elements, experiencing the crazy lights of the strip, the high fives of passersby and a good laugh with the other people on the ride.

Definitely a good time.

Let’s do it all again next year!

Turbo Kid takes you back to the future

3 09 2015

Imagine thumbing through the shelves of dusty old VHS tapes at a video store back in the 80s, stopping at one with a super hero and a  BMX bike on the cover. You smile, grab it, and stroll off knowing you’re in for some cheesy…but oh so fun…entertainment.

If you can go back and put yourself back in that headspace, well then my friend, you’re probably going to love Turbo Kid.

turbokidbanner

Billed as a  post-apocalyptic love story set in an alternate version of 1997, it has one retro nod after another.

(Let’s just say hearing “Thunder in your heart” within the first few minutes made me extremely giddy.)

The movie follows the tale of an orphaned teenage forager who, along with his female-robot companion, must fight an evil warlord who controls the only water supply. The evil warlord is played perfectly — which in this case, is completely over the top — by Michael Ironside (who I remember fondly from movies in the 80s and 90s as a biker gang member or some other villian).

Turbo kid couple

Of course there’s plenty of riding throughout the movie as it seems bikes are the only form of transportation in this world. I found myself squinting to make out all the details of the bikes…someone paid a lot of attention to make sure they looked sufficiently retro. (I got a kick out of seeing “Special thanks to Skyway Wheels” in the credits.)

Another nod to the past is the location itself. The movie is a Canada-New Zealand co-production shot in rural Quebec.

Yes, just like the most famous BMX movie to precede it, Turbo Kid was shot in Canada.  It’s enough to make a Canuck BMXer a little teary-eyed.

Program notes:

  • There’s quite a bit of Kill Bill-style bloody gore in this movie so it might not be suitable for younger kids.
  • This movie is on a limited run in most places. Catch it if you can! (Otherwise you can get it on Vimeo)

PBR & SE team up for exclusive collab

31 07 2015

It’s been said more than once: cruisers and beer, they’re a match made in heaven.

And we’ve seen some attempts in the past to bring the two together.

The most recent example was Cult Bikes’ one-off Duffman Cruiser.  Granted, Duff beer is/was a fictional beer (word on the street is that there is now a licensed version of Duff Beer available in Chile).

Prior to that, Greg Mundy of Fireman’s Texas Cruzers teamed up with Brad Farbstein at Real Ale Brewing to create Fireman’s #4 Blonde.  And as a form of cross-promotion, Greg and Fireman then offered the Brewery Bike inspired by the beer.

Now it looks like this pairing of Beer and Cruisers is hitting the mainstream. National brand, Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) is partnering with SE Bikes for The PBR x OM Flyer.

PBR SE collab

Pabst approached SE to create a bike in their colorway (white, red, and blue)…however, they wanted it yesterday…so with a couple tweaks to the existing  2015 OM Flyer (new decals and pads) the PBR X OM Flyer was conceived.

The catch?

These won’t be available to the public.

Only 83 of these bikes were created, and will be used exclusively by the Pabst Blue Ribbon marketing team. They will  be riding them at sports events and other promo activities.

Bummer.

But wait….

I noticed on the pbr_miami instagram feed…where they also have the bike featured…they say in the caption that “One lucky person will win this bad boy…stay tuned for info“….Sounds like keeping a watch on their insta feed might be a good idea…snagging one of these would be quite the catch!

Now, I don’t know about you…but I need a cold one.

Cheers everybody…it’s the weekend.

Scot Breithaupt made it happen

7 07 2015

Like many in the BMX world, the news of Scot Breithaupt’s passing on the weekend came as a shock to me.

It didn’t seem real.

And while there has been an outpouring of positive messages from the BMX community celebrating Scot’s achievements…he basically wrote the template for BMX back in the day…it still hurts.

I’ve been in a funk ever since I heard.

And going back and forth in my head of what to write about the topic.

What more can you say about this guy?

We owe so much to Scot. As a race organizer, promoter, businessman, a showman and as a fierce competitor.

Scot OM poster

The SE roadtrips back in the day are the stuff of legend. He packed a bunch of crazy BMXers in a bus (or van) and traveled across the US with them.  In the process creating experiences and stories that will last several lifetimes.

This, like so many things Scot pioneered, lives on today…How many BMX memories have been made during BMX roadtrips? Too many to count.

se_bus

SE Bikes, the legendary bike company he founded, has the slogan “We make it happen.” That was just as (or even more so) fitting to describe Scott. He “made it happen” in so many ways when it came to BMX. He gave us the template to make it happen.

SE-Bike-BoxIt’s up to us now to continue to make it happen…whether that’s holding a jam, piling into a car with friends for a BMX roadtrip or just getting out on a bike for some fun…we have to continue to make it happen. This is his legacy.

C-Ya on the other side Scot.

Friday frivolity: racing to the supermarket

22 05 2015

It’s always cool to see BMX racing get some mainstream attention.

Well, most of the time anyway.

This time it’s a bit of a head-scratcher.

I came across this interesting commercial for Japan’s SoftBank recently and thought I’d post it up.

It features SE racer/model, Miki libata as a “BMX Mom” who is pitted against an “MTB Mom” to get to the supermarket to get a deal advertised in a flyer.

MTB Mom vs BMX MomA pretty random race through the city quickly ensues.

Check it out.

Creson’s custom cruiser catches coverage

6 04 2015

Creson Dude and his custom FBM cruiser got some love recently over at the FBM page in a post titled, “Do you even loiter bro?“.

Nice to see FBM shining the spotlight on someone shredding their/his custom 24″ bike.

It would be awesome to see more of this.*

*In keeping with the title, I should have written, “It would be awesome to ‘C’ more of this”…but even I have some limits.

Breakfast tacos, SXSW, pumptracks & BMX

19 03 2015

If you’ve read my previous post, Austin Texas picture show, you know that I love visiting Austin, Texas.

So when the opportunity came up to tag along with my girlfriend’s trip to the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference, I had to jump on it.

texas wall

Granted, I knew it would be busier this time around with the conference/festival in full swing, but I had every intention of making the most of it.

sxsw crowdFrankly, I was just looking forward to some good breakfast tacos and a break from this frigid winter we’ve been having.

I love tacosFirst item on the agenda was to set up a session at the Walnut Creek pumptrack with Austin local, Buddy Sardenga.

Buddy was kind enough to not only pick me up in his sweet van–with flames on the sides–but allow me to borrow the infamous Beelzebike 20666’er bike (if you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and click the link…it’s so rad!)

Beelzebike walnut creekI probably should have taken more than this “behind bars” shot but I was having too much fun and we only had time for a quick session, so this will have to suffice. Rest assured, Buddy (and all the other super cool locals) were shredding Walnut Creek.

Next up was to visit some local Austin bike shops.

This, of course, meant a trip to Empire BMX.

I actually ended up at Empire twice during my time in Austin. They were always quick to help, knowledgeable and in-stock of whatever I was looking for.  Every town should be so lucky to have a shop like this…thankfully you can still get their great service online.

empire store front

After Empire, I made the trip out to Ozone Bike Dept.

While not a pure BMX shop per se, they did have a nice selection of Firemans Texas Cruzers in stock. The shop guys were super helpful and were quite open to helping me out with any custom options I might want to make, if I were to consider a Firemans build.

Ozone also probably has the best bike shop t-shirt that I have ever seen.

ozone bike dept tee

After that, it was off to Bicycle Farm.

I didn’t really know what to expect from this place beyond the fact that I had heard that they have a ramp in the backyard.

What I did get when I arrived, was a really cool bike shop experience! Walking in, along the side of the building, was a bunch of old and mid-school frames hanging up for sale. We’re talking an old Dyno, a Mosh frame and a bunch of other cool stuff. If you’re a BMXMuseum type…this will be right up your alley.

Turns out this shop carries both new and used bikes . The first thing that caught my eye was this Sunday build that the shop did up in a custom color.

custom sunday at bicycle farmThis thing was sooo nice!

And yes, the shop did have a ramp in the backyard.

bicycle farm rampIf you put two and two together at this point…yes, I took the Sunday out for a spin on the ramp! (Unfortunately, I was so worried that they might get me to stop, that I didn’t ask anybody to take a picture…which I probably should have…they seemed pretty chill.)

After some laps, I checked out some more cool stuff in the shop. We’re talking not only a 22″ Indust frame but a very nice looking 24″ Indust Cuatro frame! (If only my suitcase was bigger…)

All and all, a very unique shop and one that perfectly encapsulates the Austin vibe…super easy-going but serious about giving you a good experience.

Good times all around.

Tip of the hat Austin, for treating me so well.

Postscript:

I was also hoping to hit PCBMX in Pflugerville, which I have heard good things about, but ended up running out of time. Will have to check them out next time.

Toronto X-Jam madness

9 03 2015

It’s a rite of spring in Toronto.

The first weekend of March, the Toronto International Bicycle Show is held.

Along with it, a rowdy BMX contest that never disappoints. From the rad riding to catching up with old friends, it’s a event not to be missed.

This year was no different.

Qualifying rounds on Saturday were crazy. Drew Bezanson had already set the pace with a run that began with him dropping in from the ceiling.

The Sunday finals were going to be nuts.

In between all that were all things that make the BMX community so great. Hanging with friends, reminiscing about past exploits, poking fun at one another.

On Sunday, I caught up with Joe Cicman of TwoFourFlat fame. He was taking care of business over at the Flat comp going down at the other end of the Bicycle show building. We had a good chat before he had to compete again and I had to run off to catch the park finals. (That’s me, Ed, on the left; Joe on the right.)

Ed and JoeBack at the Park Finals, things were heating up big time. Banger after banger trick…it was pretty crazy.

Then the final heat.

Drew B. shimmies up a pole and uses a makeshift pulley to get his bike up to the ceiling. He tiptoes across a ledge by the windows at the top of the building. The ledge does not look as if it is even as wide as his shoes.

Then the unthinkable happens. As Drew goes to set up, he loses his footing and falls straight to the ground…his fall barely softened by the bottom of a ramp’s transition.

Unbelievably, he springs to his feet. Like a scene from a Rocky movie or some old Evel Knievel footage, he looks to the judges and makes a hand gesture to the judges saying, “One more.”

He climbs up again…sets up and boom!

270 drop-in from pretty much the top of the building.

So good.

Keeps your eyes peeled for the rest of the contest footage, you will not be disappointed.
