Freaking out over the Floval Flyer Looptail

25 08 2016

While I’ve always been partial to the Elite Series Floval Flyer, and really dug the new 26″ PK Ripper Looptail, I’m kinda freaking out about the retro coolness of SE’s 2017 Floval Flyer Looptail.

It features many of the cool throwback parts of its bigger 26″ brother and than adds even more!

2017_SE_FLOVAL_FLYER_LOOPTAIL_REAR

We’re talking about a cruiser with this laundry list of goodness:

  • Cowboy Cut forks
  • Skyway Tuffwheels with gold anodized hubs
  • Vee Tire Co x SE Racing Cub tanwall tires
  • Redline Flight cranks & sprocket
  • Bear Trap pedals
  • Kashimax seat
  • ODI Mushroom II grips.

(I would be remiss If I didn’t also note the nice, roomy 22″ top tube of the Floval Flyer Looptail…if only the Elite Series Floval Flyer came in a version this long…maybe next year Todd Lyons?)

And to top it all off? A liberal  sprinkling of gold ano on the seatpost, stem…and yes…even the alloy valve caps.

Gotta love the attention to detail!

New this year is a new 90-points-of-engagement sealed bearing cassette hub and a smattering of other good stuff like 180mm Chase Edge alloy cranks and Tioga PowerBlock/PowerBand tires.

First look: 2017 SE Floval Flyer

20 07 2016

The SE Floval Flyer has been a perennial favorite around here since we first tested the flagship race cruiser from SE so many years ago.

And with new SE models slowly being rolled out, we’ve been waiting anxiously to see what the 2017 model would look like.

Well, the pictures are out and it looks great.

There’s definitely some shiny goodness here.

2017 SE Floval Flyer

Weighing in at a more-than-respectable 22.7 lbs…this complete looks ready to race.

The bike is kitted it out with Alienation rims, Tioga Powerblock tires, Promax brakes & stem, and a lightweight Pivotal seat/seatpost setup.

Built around built around a 6066 aluminum frame (with the distinctive “floval”  bi-oval downtube), internally-machined integrated head tube and 3D-forged dropouts…it’s hard to go wrong here.

And if you’re wondering about the decals over the welds…they’re under the clear coat. They’re not going anywhere.

List price is $699 (US).

Time to start bugging your SE dealer.

Al Cayne peeps the Truth Main Event 24

12 07 2016

Last summer we got the scoop on an up-and-coming BMX company called Truth BMX .

Based out of Maryland and run by two brothers, Eric and Tony Spears, the company was quickly making a name for themselves in the race scene.

What initially caught our eye back then were their cool looking 24″ race frames.

Well, it appears they caught the attention of Al Cayne as well.

Truth BMX Main Event Pro XL 24

At the recent Stars & Stripes National, Cayne caught up with Eric Spears to do a bike check of Eric’s built up Truth Main Event Pro XL 24.

Looks like Cayne is ready to embrace the Truth too!

Check it.

SE 2017 SoCal Flyer Polished Blue

Watch for these to start hitting SE dealers in the next couple months.

Real talk with Greg Hill & Donny Robinson

16 06 2016

Last month, BMX legend Greg Hill set off a firestorm of discussion with a Facebook message he had posted in response to the news of Derby BMX (an iconic track in its own right) closing down for the 2016 season…to build a Supercross track.

GregHill

If you missed the post, have a look below:

If I see 1 more post about a track that’s building a UCI SX track I am gonna lose it!

Why the hell are people buying into this BS?

Spending a ton of cash for a SX track that caters to 1% of the sport. Why not spend money on the 99% and grow this thing? Tracks are going bye bye, membership is on decline, National attendance is slowly declining and we’re building SX tracks, WTF

If you disagree on any of this you DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING with our sport period!

Little Johnny, the newbs and the average enthusiast are who pays the bills not the few elite.

This is stupid at the highest level, people need to speak up!

-Greg Hill on Facebook, May 12, 2016 (top line bolded by editor)

Hundreds of likes, shares and comments latter and it was obvious to see he had struck a nerve.

Mike Carruth, over at BMX News, being the intrepid reporter that he is, brought Greg Hill and fellow icon, Donny Robinson on the BMX News Announcer’s Tower podcast to discuss that post, his thoughts behind it and the grassroots of BMX, along with ways we should be changing things up to grow the sport of BMX racing.

DRThe podcast is a great listen…filled with Real Talk about BMX racing, its current challenges and opportunities, and where we need to go in the future.

If you’re into BMX racing, do yourself a favor and check out the podcast.

Sheepdog still snappin’ gates

27 05 2016

If you were on the Cruiser Revolution Facebook page earlier this week you may have spotted it.

If you weren’t, maybe it’s time to take a sec and check this out.

Former GT hotshoe — and BMX Action cover boy — Kevin “Sheepdog” Hull is back on the track.

kevinhullBMXAction

The cool thing?

He’s doing it with the support of his former sponsor…Gary Turner (The “GT” from GT Bicycles).

He’s back out there snapping gates.

KevinHullSnap

And pulling his comp.

KevinHullManual

It’s awesome to see.

I guess it just proves the adage:

You can take the Sheepdog out of BMX but you can’t take the BMX out of the Sheepdog.

(That’s how it goes, right?)

So I spotted Big Foot

16 05 2016

The Gary Turner Big Foot 24 caught our eye a while back (at the time we shared a pic of the frame on Facebook)…but just the other day I spotted it — all built up — over at BMX Museum.

As you might recall, the specs on this elusive beast are befitting of its name…it’s 24″(!) top tube is the first indicator of that!

Gary Turner Big Foot 24Rob LaMielle is the proud owner of this fine build.

In keeping with the super-sized frame, Rob kitted it out with —what elsebig bars!

9″ Supercross bars just seem so right for a 24″ built for a giant.

As far as the rest of the frame specs go, the Gary Turner site says they,

“took [their] already race-proven 24″ Pedaler Race frame and stretched it. We added strength to the front end by using .049 4130 American-made chromoly tubing.”

According to Gary, “stiff chromoly frames keeps you straight out of the gate” and there’s “no flex in this front end”.

Frame geo/specs:

  • Head Angle: 72 degree
  • Seat Angle: 71 degree
  • Chain Stay: 15.5″
  • Top tube: 24″ (23 and 23.5″ also available)

If you’re a bigger dude, this might just be the frame to check out.

Pop on over to the Gary Turner site for more details and  ordering information.

S&M provides a clear choice

10 05 2016

Maybe you caught this over on the S&M page…but if you haven’t, take a look at this.

The S&M Speedwagon cruiser frame is now available in Gloss Clear.

SandM Speedwagons_CLRClearly, this is a hot-looking frame (sorry, couldn’t resist).

Yess introduces belt drive cruiser

19 04 2016

The Yess BMX belt drive race bike, powered by the Gates Carbon Drive system, got a lot of hype last year.

It was definitely a big departure from conventional BMX drive trains.

When I finally got a chance to give it a once-over at Interbike, I was impressed. At the same time, I thought to myself, “I doubt they’ll ever get around to making a cruiser version.”

Well, as it turns out….Yess did get around to making a cruiser version.

BMXNews.com dropped the news over the weekend.

yess belt drive cruiser
