GT puts the CRU in their new cruiser

27 10 2021

The nostalgia wave celebrating the movie RAD is in overdrive these days. Everyone from Etnies to Mongoose to Flite to you-name-it seems to have a marketing tie-in. And why not? RAD is a classic and something even the most hard-core of BMXers has a soft spot for.

The latest company to get on the Helltrack train is GT.

GT appears to have decided to really put the CRU in cruiser for this new bike and they showcased it this past weekend at the 3-day Classic BMX Festival the Frogtown Classic in Angel Camp, California.

With “RAD SERIES GT” on the the downtube , “CRU” in that iconic typeface on the fork and the CRU Jones-inspired pad set you know they’re really trying to pull on your heart strings for your favorite cheesy BMX movie.

Along with the classic touches, GT added some modern touches to this throwback cruiser. Peep the disc brake and comfy saddle to keep things safe and comfortable for rad dads flaunting their ride as they cruise the neighborhood.

Word on the street that these bikes are supposed to become available some time in December. I’m not sure how ambitious that is with supply chains being what they are but hey, just like in RAD, sometimes the hometown boy (or new bike buyer) has his day.

Austin, Texas is about to get RAD

11 02 2020

Austin, Texas is going to get a whole lot RAD-der over the next little while.

Bill Allen, who most BMXers know as Cru Jones, of RAD movie fame will be in town for an appearance at the Cult Classic Convention this weekend (Feb. 14-16)!

I suspect in addition to offering handshakes (or high fives) and obligatory selfies, he’ll probably also be selling and signing copies of his behind-the-scenes book on RAD.

Then….

And I can hardly believe this is true/happening:

In March, a remastered version of the movie RAD is going to get the big screen treatment as feature presentation at the SXSW festival!

So crazy.

So rad!

Bart Simpson gets a BMX bike

21 12 2015

It’s been a couple years since The Simpsons/Duffman Cruiser collaboration but it looks like the connection between The Simpsons (and Bart in particular) is only getting deeper.

About a week ago, Bart Simpson got himself a BMX bike on the show.

Bart bike zap1(Wait….are those Zap Pads?)

Radness ensues…

Springfield BMX championshipThere’s even a nod (I’m guessing) to the USA BMX Golden Crank Award…however, in this case it becomes The Golden Crutch Award.

Golden Crutch awardAnd what’s that on the wall?  A Quadangle, perhaps?

(And is that supposed to be Neil Stauss behind the mic? That’s a bit random.)

It’s pretty cool to see BMX popping up on The Simpsons after all these years.

Granted, American Dad did beat them to it with their kooky send-up of RAD. But given that Bart has always had any affinity for getting rad on his skateboard…we can’t really hold a grudge.

Still cool to see him on a BMX though!

Daniel Tosh calls out Cru Jones

22 10 2014

Comedian Daniel Tosh called out Cru Jones recently.

According to Tosh, “Cru Jones did not deserve to race Helltrack.”

Could one of BMX’s most beloved icons be…gasp… a cheat?

Send me an angel? New movie gets Rad

3 01 2014

It’s perhaps one of the oddest pop-cultural references to the movie RAD in recent memory.

In a new movie called Coffee Town (out now on pay-per-view)  a character  experiments with a recreational pharmaceutical and finds himself in a place “where love can only be expressed by BMX freestyle”…that is, the dance scene from the movie RAD. You know, the one that embedded the song Send me an angel into your memory banks like every BMX kid that came of age in the 80s.

Truly weird and cool at the same time.

Bonus info: Gabe Weed did the “stunt work” for this clip.

Rad dance scene redux

Skatepark shredding on a Felt Brink

1 02 2012

Stumbled across this video the other day and just had to post it.

Not only is it the first time that I’ve seen the Felt Brink in action, but Jay Ruff Sr has managed to combine two of my favorite things in one video: skatepark shredding and music from the RAD soundtrack.

Well done.

This video is…ahh….Rad?

11 12 2011

This year, with the RAD movie celebrating its 25th anniversary, complete with a big event in Cochrane, Alberta and word of a behind-the-scenes documentary in the works, it looks like the affection BMXers have for this movie is as strong as ever.

Now to add another log to the Helltrack fire, NYC dance group Holy Ghost is featuring a new interpretation of the infamous “bicycle boogie” scene in their video, “I wanted to tell her” (a remake of the Ministry song of the same name).

Check it out.

Nicole Kidman’s most important role

14 03 2011

Bet you never thought you would see a headline like this on CR, did you?

Tomorrow, March 15, Severin films is releasing the cult classic, BMX Bandits, on DVD and Blu-Ray.

It features a young Nicole Kidman at the start of her career.

Little did she know it would be her most important role to date.

There’s so much old school cheesiness…it’s hard to look away.

Check out the trailer.

Wonder if this will prompt the powers-that-be to finally release RAD on DVD?

We can only hope.

Is Accelerate the new RAD?

4 05 2010

Long a cult classic, RAD is both loved and hated by the BMX community. No matter what your opinion of the movie, if you’re a BMX rider you’ve seen this movie…probably more than once (in my case…probably more times than you can count). BMX Bandits, featuring a young Nicole Kidman, is pretty cheesy in its own right, but RAD took things to a whole other level.

Now over two decades later, another BMX movie is in the works: Accelerate. Will it live up (or stoop) to the standard set by RAD?  Too early to tell.  But I did read on their  site that Bill Allen who played Cru Jones in RAD will be appearing in the Accelerate movie. For a BMX geek like myself, that’s already enough reason to see the movie (just kidding…sort of). In the mean time, check out the trailer to get a taste for what will hit the big screen in 2011.

RAD movie script on eBay

15 04 2009

I’m no economist but when you see an authentic RAD movie script go up on eBay you know something is up. Either this recession is going supernova or this is a sure sign that things have gotten so bad that a rebound is right around the corner.

What’s even more surprising is who the seller is…it’s none other than bike-thief chasing Rick Moliterno.  Apparently he’s also got a boatload of the original Shimano DX pedals available for the highest bidder.

I’m holding out for that sweet candy apple red Hutch Trick Star he used to ride back in the day when he was touring with Woody Itson. If that baby goes up for sale, prepare for a bidding war.
