First look: 2018 Sunday Model C

2 06 2017

Sunday Bikes just released a preview of their 2018 lineup…and with eager anticipation I scrolled through the slideshow to have a look at the latest iteration of the 24″ Model C.

New for this year is all black colorway (with the exception of the bars and cranks which are chrome).

It’s almost the ying to the yang (or is vice versa?) of last year’s colorway: chrome with black bars and cranks).

Other than the new colorway, the Model C is pretty much steady as she goes in terms of components and setup.

The highlights are:

  • Sunday Lightning rims
  • Sunday sealed hubs
  • Odyssey Springfield brakes
  • Odyssey Twisted PC pedals
  • Sunday Tripod Seat
  • Sunday Freeze stem
  • Sunday Pursuit tires

Like last year, the frame is not full chromoly (chromoly downtube and headtube only)…but still reasonably durable and well-spec’d for the pricepoint.

Mongoose serious about racing comeback

31 05 2017

Back in December, we got word that Mongoose was making a racing comeback.

They kicked things off with a line of affordable, race-ready complete bikes that were available at mongoose.com and Amazon.

Now, it appears that Mongoose is upping the ante and expanding their race line —from four to eight models–for the 2018 model year.

According to a writeup in the Wisconsin State Journal, one reason for the expansion of their BMX category, specifically the race category, is the increased exposure BMX racing has received since its Olympic debut.

Another reason, according to Brian Baldis, Director of Product Development for Mongoose, is:

“…parents like to put their kids in those kind of formatted sports, versus freestyle, which is still the bulk of the BMX marketplace.

“Racing is seeing some uptick because it has a time, location, adult supervision and feels very much like Little League in that way. It’s been great for youths getting back on bikes in that way.”

That’s great to hear, considering the gloom and doom on Internet Forums over the past few years when the topic of participation rates came up.

Will this translate into more Mongooses at the local track?

Time will tell.

But in any event, it’s great to have this iconic brand back in the BMX race scene again.

The Beast was released

22 05 2017

Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast…for the number of times I saw footage and mentions of the new SE Beastmode cruiser this weekend was truly off the chart.

If somehow you were away from your social media feeds this weekend, here’s the lowdown.

SE hooked up with NFL player Marshawn Lynch to collaborate on the new Beastmode cruiser.

They debuted the new bike on the #OAKLANDRIDEOUT.

If all the clips and mentions that popped up on the weekend are any indication, the debut was a success.

Marshawn was in attendence, Todd Lyons and the #cyclesquadmaniacs were up to their usual antics…and it looks like people were stoked!

But social media isn’t the only place the Beastmode cruiser and the Oakland Rideout got attention.

The mainstream media also jumped on the bandwagon!

Heck, I even saw footage on HLN this morning!

No doubt about it, the world heard that the Beast was released this weekend.

Wall Street Journal writes piece on wheelies

5 05 2017

If you’ve keep up on your social media these past few days, you’ve probably already seen it…the Wall Street Journal wrote an article covering BMX, “Bike Life” and Wheelies in a piece called, “The BMX Bikes Getting Teens Back on Two Wheels — or One”.

SE Big Rippers and rrdblocks get a lot of play, as well as some commentary from Todd Lyons.

Apparently SE Bikes  (and BMX bikes in general) are seeing a sales spike over the last couple years.

That’s definitely good news! I don’t know if it’s “go-go 80s good” but it bodes well for our little piece of the cycling universe.

In other, semi-related news this week, SE also dropped some sneak peeks of the 3(!) colorways of the new 2018 So Cal Flyer.

I gotta say, I’m kinda digging the middle one…it has that Mike Buff/BMX Action trick team vibe that really takes me down memory lane.

I’m not so sure about the Killer Bees/Stryper colorway…but yellow and gold ano are definitely retro-fabulous, so I’m sure they will still get a segment of the old school heads with that version.

The blue one? Classic. Hard to go wrong there.

All in all, a good week for SE and “mainstream” coverage of BMX in general.

Hopefully, we’ll see more of this.

19 04 2017

And now to add a bit more sizzle to the souped up S&M Speedwagon 24S&M has dropped the chrome version!

Hot damn, this looks good.

I’m kinda sweatin’ this frame now.

Check the previous post for more details on the updated Speedwagon 24…and of course, hit up your S&M dealer to score one of these bad boys.

S&M soups up the Speedwagon 24

6 04 2017

Chris Moeller wanted a little more clearance to run bigger sprockets on his race cruiser…so as any good bike company owner would do…he redesigned S&M’s flagship race cruiser, the 24″ Speedwagon!

We got the first inklings of this when Moeller teased a sneak peek pic of the prototype on his Instagram page.

He said wanted to be able to run 42-18 gearing, so he incorporated a monostay into the frame to let him do it (making it somewhat similar to the old 38 Special design).

He followed that up with a closeup pic of the monostay a day later (love me some trans red!)

Now, word on the street is…they’re already available!

You can get them in clear, black, trans blue and trans red!

A chrome option is also slated for arrival in a few weeks.

Hot damn.

Spring Fling Sneak Peeks

3 04 2017

The annual “Spring Fling” happened down in Florida this past weekend and from all indications it looked like it was off the hook (Do people still say that?).

In addition to bringing together a bunch of rowdy BMXers, it was also where quite a few 2018 sneak peeks went down.

SE bikesTodd Lyons brought a bunch of cruisers from their yet-to-be-released lineup and he wasn’t shy about showing them off.

Some bikes have changed in size for 2018, like the Mike Buff Looptail…which now rolls out with 29″ wheels…

…and the Stu Thomsen STR…which is now in a available in a 26″ version.

The Cycle Squad Maniacs were on hand showcasing the new eye-popping SE Factory Squad threads. (You’re not going to miss this race kit!)

Todd Lyons and rrdblocks also showcased the wheelie proficiency of the new Big Flyers (available in two different colorways).

I think I’m most stoked on the STR-26…or maybe it’s just that picture of Stompin’ Stu roosting on it!

Reign in blood

28 03 2017

Stolen Bikes recently put together a limited-run colorway of their 24″ Gold frame and fork sets…and do they ever look cool!

Featuring a blood spatter paint job…you’ll be sure to reign in blood wherever you roll on one of these bad boys.

The catch?

Only 5 were made…and at last check, only 3 (maybe less) are still available.

Don’t sleep on this…get the horn asap to your Stolen dealer if you want to score one of these limited-run frame & fork sets.

The price is approximately $500 (US) and set features heat treated and butted cromoly thoughout.

Click here for a complete spec breakdown.

Can’t wait to see one of these frame sets built up!

First look: Kuwahara Retro Cruiser

4 03 2017

Word on the street is that Kuwahara is jumping on the retro trend and introducing a 24″ Retro BMX cruiser later this year.

So much chrome-y goodness.

Someone better alert Michael Strahan that this bike is coming on the market!

Everything’s coming up Van Halen

2 03 2017

Might as well jump to the stereo and cue up the “Panama” track because Flite Pads is introducing a new Van Halen-inspired pad set!

van-halen-pad-setHot damn these are cool.

Kinda reminds me of Tom Johnson’s custom 24″Standard cruiser from a few years back.

Let’s just hope they don’t end up like Van Homan‘s Mean Street frame.
