Pro tip: use an umbrella in staging

22 08 2014

BMX racers are always looking for that extra edge.

A couple years back, we learned that drinking a slurpee could make the difference on a hot race day.

Well, I think I have stumbled on to the next game changer in BMX, the umbrella.

If you look at other racing disciplines, it’s not uncommon to see a racer being shielded from the elements by an umbrella held by a helpful assistant.

Just look at motorcycle racing.

Or auto racing

(Heck, the sun’s not even out here!)

Not sure why BMX racing hasn’t latched onto this ground-breaking idea.

ODI even manufactures a pit umbrella, complete with a lock-on grip at the end! It’s practically crying out for BMX racers to use it in staging.

Odi golf umbrellaActually, maybe I’m being a little hasty.

I did spot a racer in staging this summer that was trying out this umbrella idea.

That’s me in the blue TLD jersey, hating life because I don’t have any shade…while over beside me, that kid is just chilling…waiting to take on his class; all cool, calm and collected.

Must be an early adopter.

I gotta jump on this bandwagon…I think I’m going to order an umbrella today.

Rob Ford makes crack about BMX track

1 08 2014

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, famous for his admission that he used crack cocaine “in one of his drunken stupors, is also notoriously anti-bike.

Now it appears his anti-bike stance has extended to the construction of the BMX track being built as one of the venues for the upcoming Pan-Am Games in Toronto.

As part of an online video series, called Coffee Run, Rob Ford takes a ride with musician DeadMau5 to talk local politics, driving in Toronto and…the construction of the new Pan Am BMX track.

rofo

Here’s just part of the conversation (starting at about 17:30):

Ford: “There are some things that are just ridiculous. Like they’re building a BMX track.”

Deadmau5: “I saw that.”

Ford: “$4.5 million … They’re saying a professional BMX track, they got a quote, listen to this, for a million and a half bucks. A f–king track!”

Deadmau5: “I’ll do it for $500.”

Ford: I’ve got more calls coming in, and they said, ‘Hold on a second, no, the real cost is going to be $4.5 million.’ And I said, ‘Whoa partner.’ I said, ‘How can you get a quote for $1.5 million and then all of a sudden it triples in price?’ There’s a scam going on if you asked me. It’s ridiculous.”

Granted, $4.5 million does seem a little rich for a BMX track.  (That must be one heck of an announcer’s tower being built.)

Regardless of where you stand on the price tag of the Pan Am track, and Rob Ford in general, it’s still funny to hear him say, after all his past shenanigans, “I’m not a BMXer” in an interview.

That, and to think of how much caffeine is in his coffee order…five espresso shots(!) in a single cup.

Wow.

Rockin’ the eye of the tiger on an SE Quad

20 06 2014

Now this is the way to start your day!

Rocking Eye of the Tiger and taking on the mean streets of the city riding a cruiser, Rocky-style.

BOOJI brand shoes brings it all together in this video from a few years back.

Enjoy.

Is Call of Duty part of the X Games now?

30 04 2014

I don’t know what to make of this.

Ride BMX and other media outlets are reporting that there’s going to be a Call of Duty video game event at the upcoming X Games in Austin.

It’s sad to think that flatland, downhill BMX racing (remember that?) and dirt has fallen by the wayside over the last number of years only to have something like this added in.

I guess you gotta leverage those Doritos sponsorships one way or the other.

Are you ready to read the book on RAD?

17 04 2014

It’s a bit ironic that a guy who played a character that skips his SATs, and all the good old-fashioned “book learnin” that entails, would find himself years later writing a book about the experience.

But here we are.

Bill Allen, who we all know and love as Cru Jones of the movie RAD, has penned a book called My Rad Career.

Cru Jones writes a book

The subtitle on the cover reads, “It was the 1980’s…hollywood celebrites and the dawn of extreme sports.”

Will it be a tell-all about the  bikes, babes and…uh...ass sliding?

Couldn’t confirm at press time but I am curious if there is a chapter on these two ladies from the movie.

Marty: the most factory watchcat

11 04 2014

The legacy of cats and the BMX media probably begins somewhere around the time BMX Action magazine introduced Cosmo, “the most factory watchcat” to readers so many years ago.

Here at Cruiser Revolution, we’re carrying on that tradition with a factory watchcat of our own, Marty.

Marty can often be found underfoot when I’m trying to type or jumping on the desk to nudge something on the floor.

Other days, he’ll be checking out my bikes….whether it’s climbing on the bars…

Or busting out moves like this one-handed lookback…

Marty’s got skills…they may not pay the bills…but I think we’ll keep him around anyway.

Ralph Macchio rode a Mongoose Two/Four

10 04 2014

In 1984, a movie about a handyman/martial artist that agrees to teach a bullied boy karate hit movies screens.

The movie was The Karate Kid.

If you came of age in the 80s, you no doubt recall this film.

But, take a minute here, do you remember the bike that Ralph Macchio, the “Karate Kid” in the movie rode?

It was a Mongoose Two/Four.

Tomfoolery from Taj: Fairdale R&D

25 03 2014

It’s not often the bike industry gives away its secrets so freely, but Fairdale Bikes head honcho, Taj Mihelich is pulling back the covers for an in-depth look into the research and development of Fairdale’s line of bikes.*

Joined by fellow R&D test rider (and flatland legend) Leif Valin, Taj highlights how they test both their  prototypes and current products. Even the 26″ Taj cruiser makes an appearance!

If this video doesn’t get you smiling, I don’t know what will.

Deep thoughts

21 03 2014

a) Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself then providence moves too. William Hutchison Murray

b) Leap and the net will appear John Burroughs

c) Hold my beer Unknown

Which inspirational thought (a,b, or c) do you think was going through this guy’s head before he attempted this?

Send me an angel? New movie gets Rad

3 01 2014

It’s perhaps one of the oddest pop-cultural references to the movie RAD in recent memory.

In a new movie called Coffee Town (out now on pay-per-view)  a character  experiments with a recreational pharmaceutical and finds himself in a place “where love can only be expressed by BMX freestyle”…that is, the dance scene from the movie RAD. You know, the one that embedded the song Send me an angel into your memory banks like every BMX kid that came of age in the 80s.

Truly weird and cool at the same time.

Bonus info: Gabe Weed did the “stunt work” for this clip.
