Is a two-speed BMX bike just too much?

Pictures have surfaced recently (on BMXmania and Vintage BMX) of Barry Nobles running a 2-speed at the recent Chula Vista SX race.

Granted, this isn’t the first time 2-speeds have been tried.

Back in the 80s, the Browning 2-speed enjoyed some short-lived popularity but was quickly abandoned due to reliability issues.

I’m not sure how I feel about this development. While it’s cool in a whiz-bang, “maybe it will work this time” kinda of way, it doesn’t feel like BMX to me.

Maybe I’m becoming a curmudgeon in my old age.

But isn’t part of the attraction of this sport the simplicity of the bikes? The race community has already adapted clips, if multi-speed bikes are next, are we just a few years from spandex skinsuits and paved tracks?





BMX Plus! sends an early Valentine

Oh BMX Plus!, it’s been nearly a year already….

Back in your April 2010 issue, you ran a cover story on the “Death of the 24.” A surprising turn of events given that you showed so much love for the cruiser in months prior to that article.

I won’t deny it. It stung a little.

Since then, it’s seems you have been on a non-stop campaign to bring the love back. There was the 10-page race cruiser shootout… a nice gesture.

And mentions of 24s in the different buyer’s guides.

But it seems forced.

Now your February issue hits the stands and I find a 3-page test on the SE Floval Flyer.

Is this an early Valentine, perhaps?

If it is, I appreciate the effort, but…

They’re still something we need to do, to bury the hatchet.

Remember the freestyle cruiser shootout I suggested before?

Run that and we can put this whole thing behind us.

SE recently announced the signing of #1 Pro Cruiser champ, Barry Nobles to its team for 2011.

Got to admire the versatility of a rider that backflips the Pro Section in the Pro Cruiser main during the 09 ABA Grands (why didn’t anyone capture this on video?) and follows it up with a #1 title the following year.





Live after death: 24s aren’t done yet

Despite showing  love for the cruiser in recent issues, BMX Plus! seems to have now sounded the death knell for the cruiser in their April 2010 issue in an article called Cruising into Oblivion: The Death of the 24.

It’s  actually kind of amusing however when you take a look at this sensationalist article in relation to the rest of the magazine. For instance, Redline has again seen fit to place a two-page ad for a cruiser in the magazine. And this time it is their top-of-the-line Flight Pro 24!  I’m going to go out on a limb and say there must be some kind of market for 24s to justify that kind of advertising.

And in their mailbag section, a reader writes in about racing Cruiser for two years, “…One thing led to another, and now I race a 24-inch Haro…”.

Are big ads and actual reader feedback not clear enough signs for Plus! that cruisers are alive and well?

Guys like Danny Caluag, Barry Nobles and George Goodall (who is  featured prominently in the Redline ad) are also keeping excitement alive in the National race scene.

And completely ignored by the article is the explosion in popularity of modern trails/park 24s…which I don’t have to convince you of, if you’re a regular visitor to this site.

The death of the 24?

Hardly.

Barry Nobles backflips in Pro Cruiser main

The ABA grand nationals went down this past weekend.  Billed as the “greatest race on earth”, it has a lot of hype to live up to. Titles are on the line and the pressure to perform is at an all-time high.  In these situations, you never know what might happen.

You expect upsets, people channeling their inner psych and taking their skills to the next level. But if you’re like Barry Nobles…you channel your inner Cru Jones and backflip the pro section in the Pro Cruiser main!

Unfortunately for Barry,  this wasn’t Helltrack so instead of the win he would have to settle for a broken collarbone and the infamy that comes with throwing caution to the wind during a big race.  Nice work Barry! As they say, pain is temporary, but glory is forever.  Thanks for mixing things up and keeping the event interesting.

Does this look like a guy that would go for a backflip in a big race?

GO211 didn’t get the flip on video (so I don’t have it to show you).  Hopefully we’ll see it somewhere in the next few days. Someone, somewhere must have had a camera rolling during that main!
