She’s got a nice tight rear end

3 12 2009

If you were into BMX in the mid 90s, you probably remember the ad for the Homeless Pornstar frame…”Long in the front, with a tight rear end you could work for hours.” Not one of the classiest ads but one of the first things that come to mind when looking at this Melms frame.

This frame features a 13.75″ chain-stay length! The Sunday Model-C, for comparison sake has a 15″ (slammed) chain stay length. Most cruisers have chain stays over 15″.

With 20″ frames back-ends getting progressively shorter, I’m actually kind of surprised that it has taken this long for someone to experiment with shorter chain stay lengths…especially with so many companies embracing the  “cruiser that rides like a 20 inch” philosophy. Maybe this is a sign of things to come…

Here’s the bike all built up:

Is this going to be you at 45?

27 10 2009

Talk about inspiring! Sunday Bikes posted an interview today with 45 year-old rider Jon Faure and his experiences with the Model-C.  This guy kicks ass! What’s even better is he gets to share his love of riding with his son. If you’re a rider getting on in years, I think you’ll be pretty stoked when you read this.

Be still my heart…flatland on a 24″ bike!

21 10 2009

Sunday bikes posted some great pictures today of flatlander Dan Sirkin busting out a bunch of flatland moves  on his Model-C.  Hitchhikers, steamrollers and more…According to Dan:

“Just about anything is possible.  It definitely spins a bit slow because of the big wheels but it holds straight lines and wide circles very well.”

Just another example of the versatility of modern-day cruisers. For more 24″ flatland,  check out this video.

Jim Bauer gets things done on a 24″

26 08 2009

No brakes, no pads, no limits.  Jim Bauer from Odyssey takes care of business on his Model-C.

Check out the Sunday site for another shot of Bauer–this time tabling out of the ditch.

What’s Eben Krackau up to now?

18 08 2009

Maybe riding his cruiser. That’s right…early 90s rider Eben Krackau has been bewitched by the siren call of 24″ wheels (Wow..sorry, that was laying it on a bit thick). Actually, beyond riding his Sunday Model-C, I’m not sure what he’s been up to.   I just know that we’ve had a bit of dry spell in terms of good action shots lately, so I’m going to take this opportunity to feature Eben shredding on his 24″. Check out the Sunday site for more on Eben Krackau and his Model-C.  Bam!

Pack it up, pack it in, let me begin

3 08 2009

If you’ve just made the switch from 20″  to 24″ bikes, you may be in for a little surprise when you get ready for your first roadtrip. The car that you could pretty much throw your 20″ into, suddenly become inhospitable for your 24″.  And unlike a mountain bike, a 24″ BMX bike doesn’t have a quick release to quickly take off the front wheel.  Solution? Always, keep a socket wrench and an allen key around and take off your front wheel and seat/seatpost the old-fashioned way.

Jim from Sunday Bikes was probably saying a few choice words here as he tried to get his Model-C in this van.

Are my handlebars big enough?

26 06 2009

Like most men, I wonder if my handlebars are big enough…are they wide enough to provide maximum riding pleasure? Are they tall enough to attract attention from the ladies? It’s been something I’ve been struggling with a lot lately…I thought these might be the answer but I wasn’t sure. Now I see that even those might not be enough. Paul de Groot’s recent Sunday Model-C bike check is making me realize what I thought was big…really isn’t that big at all. Paul has gone ahead and slapped some Solid Roseanne Bars on his bike…we’re talking a 9″ rise and 32″ wide. I try to console myself and say that handlebar size doesn’t matter…but late at night…I wonder if that’s really true.

Up, Up and Away premiere was fun

19 05 2009

Checked out the Sunday Up, Up and Away premiere last Friday at Core…for a fairly small place they really managed to pack in a lot of people for the event. The vibe was pretty chill and everyone seemed pretty eager to see the new vid. I have to say I’m pretty stoked on it. Standouts for me have to be the Aaron Ross section, and of course, all  the great footage of Jim C. on the Model-C.     24″ bikes finally get their due in a progressive BMX video!

If you didn’t get a chance to attend one of the premieres, you owe it to yourself to track down a copy and check it out. From start to finish, it’s non-stop awesome riding…this is definitely one of the best videos out there right now.

Big invert on a 24″ bike

19 04 2009

Bobby Parker from Blackout Distribution built up one of the new Sunday Model-Cs and proceeded to uncork one of the best inverts I’ve seen in some time.

Check it out.

Bad ass.

Seriously…If this is what break-time looks like at Blackout Distribution, someone needs to e-mail me an application immediately. Here’s another one:

Jim C. on the Model-C: video edit

29 03 2009

This video edit on the Sunday bikes site does a great job of showing  the Model-C and the plus 4 cruiser parts, going over all the unique design features of the bike and the thinking behind them.  More importantly it shows what this cruiser can do at the skatepark and in the streets. This is as much an ad for modern-day 24″ riding as it is for the Model-C.
Check it out.
