If you’re a 50-something cruiser rider prepping for the Worlds this year…there’s a good chance you’re going to see a familiar face in the gate with you come race day…Turbo Harry Leary!
That’s right, the former AA-Pro from the golden era of BMX (now racing in 56-60 Cruiser) is still going strong.
But don’t take my word for it though…check out this clip from the 2015 Grands…Leary still lives up to the moniker, Turbo.
I’m really looking forward to seeing footage of his class at the Worlds, it should be a good one!
Postscript: Wouldn’t it be great to see Eric Rupe, Greg Hill and Stu Thomsen (…and maybe a few more of the old school pros to round out the field) all back in the gate at the same time some time in the future? I think a lot of old school heads would explode (in a good way) if that happened.
This winter has been unrelenting in terms of storms, cold temps and all around crappy conditions.
BMXers in the northeast have been hit particularly hard by this nasty weather and are collectively just about ready to say good riddance to old man winter.
Thankfully, this weekend brings two big events that will put a spring in the step of BMXers of just about every stripe in the northeast.
The first is the annual Toronto BMX Jam. The unofficial kickoff to the contest season and an excuse for BMXers to get a bit of a BMX party going on, the Toronto BMX Jam is a contest that gets people’s stoke factor to go off the charts. Set up as part of the Toronto International Bicycle show (kind of like a mini-Interbike), it features the Toronto BMX Jam, a flatland contest, indoor racing (mostly MTB these days) and a jumping competition.
The riding is unbelievable, the crowd is loud and chances are that you’ll run into riding buddies you haven’t seen for ages. So much fun. I’ll be there Saturday and Sunday and if you have the chance I hope you will too…this is one of the most fun BMX events of the year.
Did I mention the riding is unbelievable? Check out this clip from the finals last year.
Back in the day, Greg Hill was the man in Pro BMX Racing. #1 plates, magazine covers, sports cars he lived the BMX dream. Outspoken, fast as the lightening on his lightening zap pads, he was the guy me and thousands of other BMX kids looked up to. He seemed larger than life at the time. Through the years, he left racing and got more involved in the industry side of things. In 1993, Greg and Harry Leary (another old school Pro) had a controversial interview in Ride magazine that basically called out the industry, and Chris Moeller (of S&M bikes) in particular, which made them look out-of-touch and a bit like crotchety old men. Despite this, Greg Hill has (and continues to) do a lot for the sport. He’s still an icon. That’s why I was kinda of stoked to stumble across this little gem on youtube…Greg Hill doing it for GHP and just smoking the 41-45 cruiser class.
And for all you young whippersnappers without any roots, maybe you should read this.
