Is FitBikeCo tripping?

In some ways this was unexpected…but in other ways, perfectly in line with S&M Bikes/FitBikeCo style antics.

When overbuilt frames were a thing, S&M responded with the Heavy as Fuck frame. When things veered in the other direction, the Light  as Fuck frame came into being.

Now with 26″ BMX cruisers having an extended moment in the sun….partly helped along by the #BikeLife movement….the folks at The Building, specifically FitBikeCo are set to introduce the 26″ Tripper later this summer.

And yes, if you think they’re trolling SE and Todd Lyons a bit here….well, I can’t speak for FitBikeCo, but signs point to yes, that seems to be happening.

 

From the name, an obvious takeoff of the iconic “PK Ripper“…to the colorways “Stu Blue” and Gloss Black with Gold Anno…you know what  style they’re trying to evoke.

 

 

Heck, Dougie Darrah even has the iconic OM BMX skid on lock already!

 

I guess it was only a matter of time for Chris Moeller to cook this up, given the success of their Pounding Beer forks (another SE sendup)

I’m kinda curious to see how Todd Lyons is going to respond to this…are we gonna see some dust ups between the two of them?

Similar to the old “run-ins” Chris Moeller and Harry Leary used to have back in the 80s ?

I’m looking forward to finding out.

Your pad or mine?

I don’t want to say I told you so…but I kinda told you so.

Well, maybe I didn’t so much as tell…but maybe I asked the question:

“Padsets: poised for a comeback?”

And if not the entire padset…maybe just the crossbar pad.

In that prescient post, I noted my own journey that culminated in me digging up a cross-bar pad to run on my bike.

But it’s not just me who’s holding a torch for the crossbar pad.

Shawn Mac is rocking one proudly these days on his 2018 MAC Signature Complete bike.

And now The Shadow Conspiracy is jumping into the crossbar pad game!

They just introduced a limited edition crossbar pad. (Only 50 sets exist).

According to Shadow, it’s a”callback to classic race pads. [It] features a velcro closure and a custom camo crow print.”

Friends, it’s starting to look like we might be at the cusp of a crossbar pad renaissance.

An army of giants take over the trails

McGoo, an industry insider from way back in the day, has seen it all..from Martin Aparijo doing infinity rolls to street riders wearing girl jeans to everything in between….his ascerbic answers to dumb reader mail questions were one of the highlights of Ride magazine in its early days. McGoo is now the driving force over at SNAFU and has a pretty good take on things on the industry. I check out the SNAFU blog from time to time and noticed that they have  a little something on the new bike in their “test stable”: the Mirraco Icon 20Forty.

They’ve spec’d it out with all sorts of goodies like the new OLA sprocket and prototype Splitter stem in bronze ano. Squint and you’ll see them in the picture above.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about the post is what he leaves till the end:

Mirraco isn’t the only progressive BMX company to offer a 24-inch trail/street bike for older and taller riders: Fit Bike Co., Subrosa and Haro also have two-fours in their quiver, and according to insiders at all these companies, they can’t keep ’em in stock. Does this mean an army of giants might take over the trails in 2009? Who knows. All we know for sure is this: 24-inch BMX bikes are fun to ride, and that’s good enough for us.

The italics are mine but I can’t help but share the sentiment… 2009 is going to be a big year for cruisers…there are just so many good options available now.  Older, taller riders (as well as everyone else) are starting to see how much fun they are to ride and are jumping on the bandwagon. Is an army of giants going to take over the trails in 2009? There very well might be…that is, when they are not taking over the streets, racetracks and skateparks.
