TJ “Bomber” Baldwin lives up to his name

19 10 2009

Fastlane BMX racing magazine recently interviewed British racer TJ “Bomber” Baldwin (Issue #3) and introduced him by saying:

…no one dares miss a race when the Bomber hits the gate….TJ is famous for nosediving within an inch of his life and generally making the crowd react in ways that only Evel Knievel could ever do….

So what effect does all that nosediving have on the front end of his bike? Check out TJ racing the 30-39 cruiser class at the British BMX Championships and see for yourself.

He certainly lives up to his billing though…talk about a crowd reaction!

The devil is in the details

1 10 2009

Nothing says Shout at the Devil quite like sporting a Devil on your bike’s  headtube. This picture was taken from the NBL Grands photo gallery on the Standard Bykes site.

Part of me wants to believe these are the personal rides of Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden).  A guy can dream can’t he?

Time is on my side

24 08 2009

You know how you see a bank-to-wall and instantly think wall-ride? Well, kind of the same thing happens when you have an IKEA Bravur clock hanging above your desk and an old 24″ Kenda K-Rad tire on the floor beside you. You start to wonder how they would look together…then a few seconds later…you get this.

Gives the ol’ clock a little pizzaz, eh?

When you see this on Extreme Make0ver: Home Edition eventually,  you’ll know the real deal…cruiser revolution started the whole “discarded bike part” look.

Slash has an appetite for…SE Racing?

11 08 2009

You never know what you’ll come across when surfing the interweb.

Like this picture here of Slash with a woodgrain OM Flyer (from SE Racing) on the US VERSUS THEM streetwear site. Are they hinting that a Slash-inspired 24″ is on the way?

It wouldn’t be the first time a cruiser inspired by an ’80s metal icon was on the market…remember the S&M Widowmaker? Yep, S&M and Dee Snider….now that was a match made in heaven.  Speaking of which…when is Chris Moeller going to bring that back? I think the time is right.

Are my handlebars big enough?

26 06 2009

Like most men, I wonder if my handlebars are big enough…are they wide enough to provide maximum riding pleasure? Are they tall enough to attract attention from the ladies? It’s been something I’ve been struggling with a lot lately…I thought these might be the answer but I wasn’t sure. Now I see that even those might not be enough. Paul de Groot’s recent Sunday Model-C bike check is making me realize what I thought was big…really isn’t that big at all. Paul has gone ahead and slapped some Solid Roseanne Bars on his bike…we’re talking a 9″ rise and 32″ wide. I try to console myself and say that handlebar size doesn’t matter…but late at night…I wonder if that’s really true.

Something about these number plates…

20 06 2009

There’s something about these two number plates that I really like…but I just can’t put my finger on it.

Hmm…Don’t worry, it’ll come to me.

You never know what you’ll see in Vegas

8 06 2009

Just came back from a well-deserved vacation in Vegas (if anybody’s been wondering about the lack of updates recently). Bunch of stuff to talk about, so stay tuned for updates.

For now, check out this sign I passed on the way to the awesome Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. Too funny.

A flair in the middle of a race?

24 05 2009

Back in the mid-90s Todd Lyons solidified his “wildman” status by uncorking backflips in the middle of races. Well,  this wily German racer seems intent on one-upping the wildman with a mid-race flair…or is it supposed to be a barrel roll?

You do double peg stalls like a girl

5 05 2009

Remember in grade school, if you threw a baseball funny, they would say, “you throw like a girl”. Now apply this line of thinking to BMX, specifically this vid of Natalie Wade demonstrating  how to do double peg stalls. She’s funny (in a good way) and can do some nice peg stalls. Considering how squirrely some of the kids at the local park are, learning how to double peg stall like a girl (like Natalie) would be a step in the right direction.

Here’s another one that gives you the 411 on disasters…and apparently the importance of a good grooming and a hearty breakfast.

And who is this Natalie Wade? She’s  married to some guy named Morgan Wade…word on the street says he’s no slouch on a bike either.

The pallet quarter – reuse, recycle

22 04 2009

It’s Earth Day and everywhere you turn people are talking up their efforts to be environmentally friendly. Riding your bike is one of the greenest forms of transport…but why not take it a bit further?  One of the funnest things you can do is build yourself a nifty little transistion to ride made out of pallets. Alternatively called the “pallet quarter” or the “ghetto quarter” it’s just another way to reuse and recycle.
