All in the family: the Shipp stable of bikes

After checking out Cruiser Revolution for a while, Andy Shipp made the decision a few months ago to get his first cruiser. He went with a 2011 Mirraco 20forty.  Full chromoly construction was a big selling point and it was well spec’d for the price.

His wife ended up liking his new 24 so much, she bought a DK Cygnus cruiser for herself!  (Andy and his wife have two young sons…wonder if they’re going to be able to keep up to Mom and Dad?)

However, after riding the Mirraco for a short while, Andy decided that he needed to make a change.

He realized he would be happier on a frame with new school geometry, one  that was more suited to his style of riding.

The Sunday Model C fit the bill perfectly.

He tracked down a new Model-C frame for a great price and did a frame swap. (Perhaps inspired by the DIY complete post?)

Andy says his new 21.75″ Sunday feels much more like what he remembers from his 20″ days, only smoother and more comfortable.

And his Sunday turned out really nice!  The red components really pop next to the silver frame.

Both Andy and his wife’s rides are sporting Cruiser Revolution stickers, and they have turned on a few other folks to cruisers and Cruiser Revolution (thanks guys!).

Andy seems pretty stoked that he’s taken the plunge into the world of cruisers…and that enthusiasm has clearly spread to the rest of the family. I just heard that they added a new bike to the collection,  A DK Kvant for their oldest son.

Mirraco 20Forty gets a new look

Ride BMX recently posted something on the 2011 Mirraco lineup that  included their 24″ complete, the 20forty. Looks pretty good in the flat black and red (the two different coloured wheels is a cool touch too).

Here’s the rundown of the specs (so far):

  • integrated headset
  • full chromoly bars and fork
  • three-piece chromoly crankset
  • sealed mid BB
  • Black Label Graduate plastic pedals
  • Black Label Slimfast 25t alloy sprocket
  • 21.3″ top tube

Mirraco is in the process of updating their site, so I suspect full bike specs will be posted when that goes live.

I’m little leery that there’s no mention of the frame material while the bars and fork are listed as full chromoly. I’m hoping that’s just an oversight and not a case where some high-ten steel tubing is getting snuck  in. If anybody has an “in” at Mirraco to find out, let me know.





Felt jumps into 24″ trails scene

Add Felt Bikes to the growing list of bike companies to put out a 24″ bike for trails, street and park riding.  The Felt Brink is a good addition to their lineup as it provides an alternative to their pure-race Sector 24.

Unfortunately, despite how stoked I am to see another bike company jump onto the new school 24″ bandwagon I’m little disappointed in how it’s spec’d out. The frame is only main frame cr-mo (top tube and down tube), the bars hi-ten and the price kinda  high. A bike like the Mirraco 20forty is spec’d a whole lot better for nearly the same price.

Hopefully they’re just testing the waters for ’09 and will step things up next year…otherwise why bother  if you’re not going to put out a full cr-mo frame…it doesn’t seem to make sense to have a steel backend for trails, street and park riding…..

Bonus info: if you write into Felt with a question about their product line you have a very good chance of getting a response from Brian Foster’s older brother, Alan. Remember him? One half of Schwinn/Airwalk’s one-two race punch in the 90s.
